Chapter one:
If there was one thing that violet couldn't understand it had to be her twin sister's outlook on life. It was as if Sarah was only realizing that life wasn't fair. And it couldn't have come at a worse time. Violet could barely sit at the same table as her sister before becoming fed up with Sarah's woes of how unfair her life was; "My drama teacher says I need more practice, it isn't fair." "Olivia has blonde hair and pretty brown eyes and I'm stuck with ugly brown, it's not fair." "Why do I have to take care of Toby, it's not fair!" It's not fair, it's not fair, it's not fair! Violet often wondered if her sister even knew the meaning of the words anymore.
Violet couldn't stand this outlook on life as she; herself was a firm believer that everything happened for a reason. This was one of the factors that kept them apart. It wasn't a secret in the Williams household that Sarah and violet were as different as day and night. For one, even though they were twins they looked nothing alike. Sarah was tall with straight brown locks and clear green eyes. Violet was shorter than Sarah with curly raven locks and strange violet eyes, hence her name. Her eyes had caused some frustration when she was born as neither her mother or father's side ever had violet eyes. Like their appearances, their personality's also differed; Sarah was petulant and thought the world was out to get her, whereas, violet was understanding and saw everything in different ways. The only thing they had in common was their love for fantasy and fairy tales. They were like yin and yang her mother used to tell them before running off with her younger lover. Their relationship with their parents was strained. Violet hated their mother, Linda, who ran off when they were 11. What woman leaves her own children? Violet wanted to have lots of them when she was older, she adored them. Sarah came from the same cloth as their mother. She wanted to be an actress and adored Linda as if she was the second coming of God. Their relationship with their father was different. They felt that he had no time for them anymore after marrying his new wife, Irene, and having a baby, their new brother Toby. Violet loved Toby as a big sister should but Sarah let her jealousy get in the way of her seeing Toby as more than a pest bent on ruining her life.
Violet closed her eyes briefly and rolled her shoulder as she tried to refrain from thinking of her older sister. It would only bring her further frustration. The door to the kitchen opened as Irene entered the kitchen. Violet didn't mind Irene as she was civil and acted as a female role model to her which her birth mother lacked to do. "Violet where's Sarah? She's an hour late and you know I don't like you all alone watching Toby. I swear she does it on purpose! She knows I like you both to be in the house when where out" she ranted. Violet knew she didn't mean anything in a bad way; she was a mother and felt protective of her child. It was natural. "I'm sure she'll be here soon Irene. She said she was going to the park," violet answered more calmly than the woman who was about to have a hysterical fit.
Violet sat at the kitchen table eating her sandwich and just simply enjoying the calm that came after the storm, in other words enjoying the peace after Sarah and Irene's argument. It hadn't been pretty. Irene had mentioned Sarah's social life or the lack of and then Sarah went on a "it's not fair' crusade. Silenced entered the house as soon as Sarah went to her room and Irene left the house. She took a bite of her sandwich, comforted by the silence. Until Toby's wails were heard throughout the house. 'It's going to be a long night', she thought as she abandoned the sandwich in favor for her baby brother.
The sight before violet did not shock her at all. Her sister was immature and shouting at a baby over a teddy bear was not below her. But she would not stand for it. "Leave him alone Sarah!" "Now it's my fault?!" Sarah breathed out in rage. "That monster stole sir Lancelot from my room!" violet didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "So your telling me a baby crept into your room, used his ninja skills to climb your shelf all to steal a dumb bear?" "Sir Lancelot is not a DUMB bear!" violet decided to ignore the foaming girl in favor of the little boy who had a set of lungs on him. "What's wrong baby?" she cooed as she rocked him in her arms. She bent down for his bottle and noticed it was empty. "I'm going down stairs to fill Toby's bottle. Do you think it's within your ability to look after him until then?" she asked Sarah who scoffed at her in reply."Of course I can! I'm not stupid." Violet held her reply in as she left the room.
Two scoops of baby formula later and violet was shaking the mix. Toby was still crying and she could hear Sarah's raised voice. BOOOOOOM! Violet nearly jumped out of her skin as thunder struck outside. She placed a hand over her heart to calm down but it only beat faster when she heard Sarah bellow her name. "VIOLET!" dropping the bottle violet ran up the stairs, nearly tripping on the way, and into Toby's room. The room was dark. The only light was the moon glimmering into the room. She could barely make out Sarah. "Sarah what's wrong!?" Her sister was nearly sobbing. "Toby's gone" violet could feel the blood drain from her face. She ran to his cradle. He wasn't there. "Where is he Sarah? What happened?" Sarah stared at her with tear filled eyes. She sniffed," he wouldn't stop crying so i read him my book, the labyrinth, and I wished the goblins would take him away! And now has gone." The tears were now sliding down her cheeks. Violet couldn't think straight. Her sister was telling her that goblins took their brother. BANG! Both girls jumped as the window banged open and in flew an owl.
