The Hardest Task
A/N: I wrote this oneshot fic following the ending to the final episode.
Jill watched through the round portal as the operation continued. The last half hour had just been a blur that she couldn't quite get her head round. It felt like one moment everyone was happy and cheering outside and the next Gordon was being rushed into the theatre. A tear streaked down her face as the events once again played through her mind. For a minute she was unable to take looking at the still body on the operating table and turned her eyes to the floor of the theatre in an attempt to compose herself. This didn't work however as it was only then she noticed the amount of blood littering it. Knowing where the blood had come from made it even harder for her to think about. The woman looked up and saw the full scene once again. Everyone in the theatre was working so desperately to save her husband's life and she mentally thanked them for the effort they were clearly making to make this operation a sucess. Another tear fell as she whispered.
"Please hang in there. Please"
As she focused on the figure in the middle of the room, her eyes brimmed with more tears threatning to fall and the emotions she was feeling were clearly visible. Memories flashed of the times they had spent together. Memories of the man she treasured more than anyone else. Memories of laughter and joy but also memories of tears and comfort. It had only been short so far and this was no way for it all to end. It wasn't fair. Why, she questioned herself, of all the people in the world why does it have to be him on that table. The only thing the doctor knew was that she needed him to pull through. She needed him to make it so she didn't have to do the dreaded task she feared might yet be left to her. Watching as her colleagues operated to the best of their abilities may be one thing but it was nowhere near as hard as what could come of it.
"Hold on Gordon. For me"
Listening the best she could she could hear Ralph make his voice louder as he pointed towards something in the room. Jill could tell without properly hearing his words that something was wrong and she kept her eyes transfixed on the scene to try and find out exactly what. When she saw how Mr Rose leaped into action she knew on instinct that they were losing him. Not caring to fight the tears anymore they streamed down her face. Please, she pleaded silently, don't do this. Forcefully the woman removed her gaze from the scene, unable to even think of what could happen let alone watch it from the sidelines. She stood in the seemingly dim corridor where she could still hear the commotion inside the room. Mere minutes later the commotion died down and it seemed like everything was over. She was ready to prise herself to the portal to check what had happened but before she had chance the theatre door opened. As Mr Rose came towards her she braced herself for the worst.
"Jill"
He called her name with an unusually soft voice. She held her breath and looked up at his expressionless face for news, wishing so hard for it to be good.
"He pulled through. Barely, but he made it"
Her heart jumped at the news. Never had those words given her so much relief. She released the breath she had been holding as a sigh of pure relief. He was still alive. Relief took over her body as she fully took in what she had just been told. She gave Mr Rose a slight smile in response, the first time she had smiled since their earlier celebrations had been suddenly disrupted. Thank you, she thought. The doctor had no idea who she was thanking but it just came into her mind. Thank you for not making me do it, the hardest task. Thank you for not making me have to say goodbye to the one I love.
A/N: There you go. I hope people like it and give me reviews :)
