Disclaimer: Supergirl does not belong to me. Were it mine then I would definitely have done things differently; but hey, I guess that's what Fanfiction is for. This is my first Supergirl fic, so please try to be nice. Reviews are greatly appreciated, but not required. Oh, and don't forget to enjoy.
Kara had always known that this day was coming; the day she'd sacrifice herself to save someone – or an entire planet in this case. She'd been preparing herself for it since she arrived on this planet 13 years ago, admittedly the only life she thought she'd be saving was Kal-El's, but knowing that her actions had saved hundreds of thousands of people – Kal-El included, was understandably so much better. It was the reason why she had accepted her fate so easily. She'd said her goodbyes to those who mattered… those she could; it was an important first step for her to take, one she'd never had the chance to take with her family before Krypton's devastating destruction.
As she floated, fighting for breath in the unoxygenated vacuum that was space, she smiled. Her mom had told her to be brave…. Had always told her that she had the heart of a hero, and as her consciousness fluctuated; she realised for the first time since coming out as Supergirl, that her mom may not have been wrong after all.
This time, as she drifted in the unknown, she knew what awaited her when she finally came to rest; the family she so desperately desired to return to. She did feel sad for leaving so many people behind… people that she loved, but she'd fought so hard for so long, she deserved to be at peace.
Even the biting cold that space threw her way wasn't enough to wipe the smile off of her face, as her lungs heaved frantically in a futile attempt to keep her failing body alive.
Every superhero had a moment… one moment that defined them. This, she supposed, had been hers.
Her life's mission was to protect her cousin… to protect Kal-El. With Myriad no longer able to hurt anyone, she knew that he was safe once again. And so, with fluttering eyelids, and slow – too slow intakes of breath, Kara Zor-El, Supergirl and Kara Danvers were all laid to rest.
Earth was safe… but it's saviour would not be around to see it prosper in the wake of such devastating events.
Well, although Supergirl had resigned herself to her fate, one person… one single individual hadn't. The world needed Supergirl, and Alex needed her sister. It was as simple as that: The Danvers sisters against the world. Just as it always had been. Just as it always will be. Kara's pod whirred to life, seeming to know the destination before Alex even had a chance to figure out just how to tell it where to go. She knew there was little time to waste on trying to tell the obviously sentient craft what to do, so she focused on the only thing that mattered: Kara.
The blonde would apologise profusely for having nearly died in the first place, but Alex would hear none of it… she never had listened to the rambled apologies, and she never would.
Because Supergirl may have been the world's saviour, but Alex Danvers was definitely hers.
