Topside
Prompt: Buried in work...
A/N: Written for LJ. I'm doing a lot of prompt challenges lately.
It was really a simple question: Are you pleased with where you are? And yet, he never once gave her a relevant answer. It seemed that his responses, quick as they were, varied based on the weather alone. A strange pattern for him to come up with, and one that had gone unnoticed by her for several weeks. On the days that the sun shone down upon the city, bringing joy and peace, he would simply grin at her before returning to his regular duties. When it rained, he would stand quietly at the window, only turning to say, "I've been to hell and back."
At first, it appeared to be just another one of his games. As if she didn't have enough of those to solve when they weren't in uniform. His mood had been bright since his return to his position and recent promotion. The two of them reported directly to the newly elected Fuhrer, their old team still scattered and serving throughout the country. Although she dearly missed her old companions, she truly didn't mind taking over the paperwork they would have completed, as Roy had willingly started pulling his weight.
They'd gone through hell together, and, even if he hadn't lifted a finger to aid her with the filing and such, she would have gladly done it again. Perhaps it was stupid to think such a thing, as the words in her head were far too cliché d for their own good, but she sincerely believed that she had loved him from the beginning. If not, she doubted that she would have suffered alongside him for so long, wading through blood, tears, and fire to pull his head above the waves.
Although he wasn't standing at the head of the nation, he was still topside, with his head in the clouds and his heart in the right place.
I've never done a RoyRiza fanfiction before. Why is that...?
