The noises of boots stepping on sand and tiny broken fragments of unknown objects echoed in the desolated city, the sun shone mercilessly down onto the teenager who trudged on, nearly bleaching tan skin which were covered in sweat.
The teenager, Gon paused and turned his head at the presence he felt, but he couldn't see anyone there. His mouth opened, and he whispered the name of a person he knew so well, of a person he hadn't seen in a while, of a person that he'll be lying if he said he didn't miss. He turned towards the direction of that presence, and ran.
It's not out of curiosity, but it's because of how familiar the presence felt, the presence that he longed to be by his side, always.
At a distance away, he saw the all too familiar figure of another boy, just standing, watching silently as he ran with all his might towards him. Those blue eyes seem lighter and happier from the last time he saw them, with a small and gentle smile graced his face, and his entirety looked so much more mystic than Gon think the boy is.
Tears pooled under amber eyes, blurring the sight of the other boy. He was fully aware of the ache that presented itself in his heart, which he knew what it meant but refused to believe it as he ran with full speed, but he felt like he needed to go faster, he needed to wrap his arms around the slender body and bask in the warmth and the smell of his best friend that he missed so badly.
Gon opened his arms wide, the name of the other boy just at the tip of his tongue as he jumped towards the boy. He brought his arms down to envelop the boy and to squish the boy's body onto his, and could barely catch himself when he fell onto the ground with nothing in his arms.
He pushed himself up, scraped knees and elbows went unnoticed, as he remained seated on the dirty ground. Oh, so it is true. Gon was referring to the ache in his heart that had appeared a few days after he and his best friend went their own ways, but it's not that he didn't know in the first place, he knew and yet he refused to accept it.
He refused to accept the fact that the person he treasured the most is gone forever.
Gon let his tears overflow, slipping down his cheeks as he called out the boy's name in grief and pain, and acceptance.
'Don't worry, Gon.'
The voice of the boy rang out, Gon didn't understand much, how come he's able to hear the boy's voice, but he kept on listening.
'I'm alright, and you'll be too,'
Liar. He can't be alright without the other. How is he going to move on with the ache in his heart, no one to share his experiences with, to sleep with and to take comfort in?
'Because from now on…'
Gon smiled a little as the voice finished his sentence, he eventually stop crying and pick himself up, continuing his journeys and adventures, accompanied by the never fading ache in his heart, and a boy's ghostly presence by his side.
'Because from now on, I'll be watching over you.'
