She had failed again. Ruby failed to protect her team from harm again. Blake had been attacked for her heritage in downtown Vale. She didn't have anything broken, luckily, only bruises and smeared make-up. The rest of her team only had light scratches from prying Blake out of the clutches of the monsters whom hurt her, and wished to do far worse. Blake had asked to be left alone for the rest of the afternoon upon being released from the hospital wing of Beacon Academy, and her team obliged, leaving her to herself.
But Team RWBY's leader was having a hard time letting her teammate be alone when she desired so deeply to help her feel better. Succumbing to that need, Ruby crept her way through the shadowy halls up to the roof, where the shattered moon's dim glow provided the only natural light. There, Ruby found Blake, crouched down with her head in her crossed arms. Any sobbing was over at this point. Blake had probably done her fair share in solitude. Ruby padded over slowly to her teammate.
"Ruby, i sai-"
Ruby placed a finger over her teammates lips and slowly sank to her knees to meet the Faunus girl at eye level. Before the Faunus girl could protest, Ruby threw her arms around her teammates neck and held her close. At first, Blake didn't move, but then she allowed the hug, draping her arms limply around her leader's waist and resting her ear against Ruby's shoulder. For a while, no words were exchanged, just a hug. An idea struck Ruby like a solid object, and she moved back from her teammate a step, staying in her knelt position.
From Blake's perspective, the hug had ended abruptly and her leader's quick movements once again left her a little confused, and then Ruby's hands were working at the ties on her hood.
Ruby pulled off that long hood that you'd normally have to kill her and pry it out of her cold fingers to get from her and wrapped it's warm cloth around her teammate's shoulders.
Blake felt the delicate, silky fabric of Ruby's burgundy cape wrap itself around her just like Ruby's arms had only moments ago, it's warmth raising goosebumps on her skin. It smelled lightly of Beacon Academy laundry detergent and roses, and there were undertones of the smell of that drink from downtown Vale that Ruby had taken a likening to.
"But, Ruby it's yo-"
"Right now, you need it more than i do."
From her position on her knees in front of Blake, Ruby half smiled down at her teammate for a flicker of a moment, and cupped Blake's face in her hands with her thumbs coming to rest on her temples. Tenderly, Ruby planted a kiss on Blake's forehead. Pulling away and slowly standing, Ruby turned and walked back into the academy to get some sleep after such a bad day.
Looking down at the ground, Blake whispered a soft 'Thank you' to her leader, and laid back against the ornate stone railing clutching her teammates cape, looking up at the moon with a glint of hope in her eye.
