"All you have to do is walk over there, pull the little red lever down, act all innocent like you do, and run for it," said eleven-year-old Jake Blues. "Piece of cake."
Elwood rolled his eyes. "If it's so easy, why don't *you* do it?"
"Because!" Jake said. "You're smaller and more innocent looking. The Penguin would nail me for it in about two seconds, no one would suspect you."
Elwood shook his head. "I'm *not* small. And I'm not innocent, either."
"Doesn't mean you don't look it. The nuns all think you're *adorable*." Jake's comment made Elwood blush and shake his head. "You know it's true, you milk it every chance you get. Just go!"
"No way!"
"If you get caught, just say I put you up to it."
"I *always* say that. It's *always* true. One day, I *will* get in trouble for something like this, Jake."
Jake patted him on the head. "Don't worry, El. Today's not that day. Now go."
Elwood sighed and turned away from his brother, slowly making his way toward the fire alarm. He didn't understand why Jake wanted so despiratly to sound the alarm, it wouldn't accomplish anything, as far as he knew. Best he could think was that Jake just took great joy in making anyone, especially the Penguin, squirm.
It hadn't occurred to either of them until Elwood actually got to the alarm that he might be too short to reach it. He stood, assessing the situation, and then got up on his tip-toes, reaching for the alarm, which remained several inches out of his reach. He jumped up, but the alarm was still too high.
He kept trying for several minutes before a dark, very imposing shadow fell over him.
"Elwood!"
Elwood spun around. He'd been caught. Not only had he been caught, he had been caught by the one person he feared the most in this whole entire world. Mother Mary-Stigmata. The Penguin.
"Elwood, what do you think you're doing?"
"Uh..." He looked toward the hall which he had come, and Jake was no where to be seen. "I, uh... it was Jake's idea!"
"It always is," she sighed. She turned and walked into the hallway. A cry was heard, and she returned, pulling Jake by his ear.
"Leggo leggo leggo!!" Jake's face was turning red. The Penguin brought him over to Elwood and let go of him. Jake put his hand over his ear and glared her, not saying a word.
"Explain yourselves."
The two brothers remained silent for several moments, before Elwood spoke up.
"Scavenger hunt!" he said.
"A scavenger hunt?" The Penguin didn't seem convinced.
"Well, yeah," said Jake. "And... we were supposed to find... something red on a wall."
The nun raised her eyebrow.
"That's red. And on the wall. That's what we needed."
Elwood nodded, agreeing.
"Somehow, I don't believe that, coming from you, Jakob."
Jake's eyes widened and he looked at Elwood, his last hope. Elwood understood the silent plea for help and busted out his secret weapon. Puppy-dog eyes.
"We really didn't mean any harm," He said, sticking out his bottom lip slightly and making is eyes a wide and innocent-looking as possible.
The Penguin sighed and shook her head. "I'll let you two go this time. But if I catch you near that alarm again..." She turned and walked off, and Jake took a deep breath.
Jake turned and smacked Elwood over the head.
"Ow!"
"Why weren't you watching out!?"
"I thought you were!"
"You're lucky I was here to bail you out."
"Oh yeah, right."
"Don't argue with me!" Jake said. "I'll get the entire 6th grade after you."
"Oh no you wouldn't," said Elwood. "They all hate you anyway."
"They hate you, too!" Jake exclaimed.
Elwood grinned. "They wouldn't beat me up, though," he retorted. "They'd get in trouble. And besides, I'm adorable, remember?"
Jake glared. "Shut up. No more talking."
"You love me."
"Shut up or I'll slap you."
