So this is the new year…

He could see the city from up here. A thousand shining lights in a thousand shining colors. The bells had finished chiming. The party had finished cheering. 365 days were over and done.

He could see them in the reflection of the window, dressed up and fancy and pretending to be more than they were worth. And here he was, with his suit and tie and grace and blood-red wine. And his memories.

There was the girl with the eyes that had sparkled whenever she'd seen him. A thousand shining lights dancing behind shades of brown. She'd died this year – last year.

"Aren't the lights of the city pretty, Light? Aren't they pretty?"

Yes. They were beautiful. Like you had been.

And then there was the boy with the starless midnight eyes, lit up by cake and the screens of computer monitors. His friend (his enemy) His closest companion (his worst nemesis). That bastard. That wonderful, horrible bastard.

"But… I…"

But what? You never told me. You'll never tell me.

"Aren't the lights of the city pretty, Yagami-kun?"

A blur of color, coming in and out of focus. He could feel his thoughts running down his face. Softly, timidly, after having been locked up so long.

"Yagami-kun? Are you all right?"

"Yes, Takada-san. They're beautiful. Like you."

So this is the new year…
