Life used to be so complicated. Of course, during his old life as Private Jace Davidson, he used to have so much to keep track of; which base he belonged to, which targets he needed to attack, how much ammo he was packing, even his name. All that was now irrelevant to his newfound purpose in life.
The comforts the Overmind provided were simply exquisite. All his fears from his former lifestyle had been eliminated, along with the burdens his former species put upon him. There was no longer a need for him to carry heavy weaponry with him wherever he went, nor did he need fear the Zerglings that had infested the surface of Mar Sara.
He was one of them now.
A small force of Terrans had been spotted just southeast of the Hive Cluster. They were trying to get to the Cerebrate, no doubt - that's all they wanted now. The group consisted of a many Marines, Firebats, some siege tanks, and a few Goliaths. Nothing to worry about, but still a matter to be dealt with.
He felt joy previously unknown to him when the Overmind had selected him to be one of the few to eliminate the Terrans. He, along with a troop of Hydralisks, Mutalisks, and Zerglings, were sent off immediately, and currently had found perfect burrowing spots in a narrow pass the Terrans were approaching. It was only a matter of time before destiny would greet him.
The Mutalisks had kept themselves hidden around the valleys as scouts. They would be called for when the time to strike was at hand.
A dull moan, constant and accented with methodical thuds of mechanical and human feet, grew louder above them. The Hydralisks were the first to reveal themselves, bursting from the earth like broodlings from human flesh. Terran screams of surprise forced a grin across his face. Mutalisks and Zerglings arrived for the attack soon after. His job would be to eliminate any remaining Terrans, should the Zerg be destroyed before the mission was complete.
And so he waited while the small battle was fought overhead. Gunfire and explosions quickly died, along with Terrans and Zerg troops. Soon enough, it was quiet above him. He frowned - had they all been wiped out?
"Damnit, forgot they knew how to do that," grumbled the muffled voice of a Marine.
He smiled. The Zerg appendages that had been grown from his body allowed him to quickly pull himself above ground to face the pathetically small number of Terrans remaining; nothing more than six Marines and two Firebats. All their larger forces had been scattered in shards of metal around the pass.
The Terrans immediately raised their guns towards him but didn't fire. He could imagine the aghast expressions on their faces, hidden beneath the tinted faceplates of their suits.
Someone cried, "What in the name of God is that?!"
Former Terran Jace Davidson sneered and spoke in a voice partly his own, partly Zerg, but completely owned by the Overmind, "I am God now."
Gunfire started up once more and bullets embedded themselves into his body. But the shell of Davidson walked towards them with slow, mocking steps. Like the cowards he knew them to be, they backed away, shouting curses.
For the Overmind. For the Hive.
His legs pushed him towards a Firebat. Instinctively, the foolish human pulled the trigger to his flame-throwers, bathing the malformed body in crimson light. Cruel laughter forced through Davidson's throat as he felt glands within him expand and burst, one by one.
Former Terran Jace Davidson, once a soldier of the proud Confederation, exploded in a brilliant flash of light and explosive chemicals, taking each and every one of his former comrades with him.
Destiny was a beautiful thing, indeed.
