I Am Maximum Ride

She folded her wings tight, and jumped.

Max was in ruins. The flock was expiring, so to speak. Izzy was back with his parents, Nudge, practically lying on her deathbead at the Martinez's. Gazzy and Angel had gotten a lead that their parent were somewhere in Miami, and had been off. Even Total had left. He'd flown off with Angel. Ironic isn't it? Not even a dog could stand me. And Fang… Fang was gone. Max didn't know where or why. But he was gone.

Life had no meaning anymore. There was no Itex to destroy, and the world was saved. The ultimate Maximum Ride, was over. She had no use anymore. She was old news.

Max had seen the cliff while flying aimlessly somewhere in the Midwest. It was perfect.

Looming over the ground with a terrifying 297 feet, it was just enough to be a fatal fall. Especially for a Avian American with no where else to go but down.

Max skidded to a halt, and looked down. The ground looked wonderfully far away. She smiled once, not really sure why, and took a deep breath.

She folded her wings tight, and jumped.

As I fell, I saw a dark shape on the horizon. In my daze, I hoped that it could be Fang. I recognized certain features on the creature. Dark, powerful wings, head bowed to the wind.

But no. The shape was too small to be Fang. And that would require me to have luck. But I was all out.

I closed my eyes once more, and waited for the cold, hard ground to hit me, and snuff the useless light that had become Maximum Ride.

Tears streamed out of my eyes, breaking through the old barriers that had held them back. My name. Maximum. I chose it myself.

It used hold power. Fear. Intimidation. But now, it was merely a rag. Drenched in water, then wrung out, till not a single drop remained embedded in the cloth.

Maximum Ride.

The ground was getting closer.

Maximum Ride.

I smiled.

Maximum.

I landed on my side.

Ride.

And the world went black.
