Just a little something I whipped up at two in the morning while listening to nightcore. Hope you like!

Disclaimer: I own nothing.

He'd see her around a lot, mainly roaming in the forest without a care in the world. Every time he saw her, his heart ached. The ache was familiar – it was dull – but brought back good memories that made the butterflies flutter in his stomach relentlessly. Perhaps the memories brought back the butterflies, or maybe it was the girl he would see running in the forest, barefoot. She didn't seem to care that there was broken glass strewn everywhere, half-buried under a light layer of dirt and old, crusty leaves, and that the possibility of her cutting her feet was highly likely.

"She's going to get in a lot of trouble," Jess remembers his mother grumble, like she could possibly understand what was going on in that girl's head. Jess couldn't even begin to fathom what thoughts ran through that girl's mind, but part of him really wanted to know. Part of him wanted her to open up to him and pour her secrets into him, where they would stay for an eternity until the day he died.

She reminded him of a friend long gone.

A very special friend who forever held a special place in his heart, even though she was already long gone.

He lost track of how many days, months, years had passed since his poor friend had left this world and had moved on to the next. He had fears that her soul would forever drift in Limbo, but he eventually realized that no God would damn such a beautiful soul like hers to Hell. He stopped counting, but he never stopped thinking about her. He wasn't going to forget her.

And when the barefooted girl from the woods spots him standing on the bridge he built with leftover floorboards from the Burke place, she walks over – the threat of cutting her feet looming over her even as her feet touch clean, solid wood – and says hello.

With a smile, Jess returns the greeting, and they become engaged in a carefree conversation and he feels like his old friend never really left.

Leslie had always been with him.

Please excuse the slight reference to religion – I don't like putting anything relating to religion in any of my fanfics, but I felt that the little bit I threw in won't really hurt anybody and was appropriate for this little drabble-fic.

Also, I understand that Jess is a Christian and not a Catholic but please don't point out the religious inaccuracies. I really don't care, nor does it really concern me, so I'll appreciate it if you don't start a war with me about the topic. Thanks. :)
