So much for my happy ending
oh oh, oh oh, oh oh...
Detective Joe Morelli was at a loss for words. It didn't happen often, and sure as hell not when he was this pissed off, but it was nonetheless true tonight. He was past being pissed, past everything really. Somehow, when he wasn't looking, a part of his world had crashed into nothing.
Let's talk this over
It's not like we're dead
Was it something I did?
Was it something you said?
Stephanie ignored his presence in the room as she finished packing her things. Rex was already in the car, and somehow he got the feeling she was gone even now.
Don't leave me hangin'
In a city so dead
Held up so high
On such a breakable thread
"Don't do this, cupcake," he managed to say at last. "You don't have to go."
At least it got her to turn around and look at him, to see him for the first time that day. But it didn't change her mind; he saw that too. Her blue eyes were cool as a September sky when she spoke. "I'm sorry, Joe," she told him, and she actually looked like she meant it. "I can't stay here. There is nothing for me."
You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought we could be
Joe shook his head, not believing his own ears. "I'm here."
Stephanie moved toward him, as she wanted to embrace him, but she stopped and turned away. He felt something inside him slide away too.
You were everything, everything that I wanted
We were meant to be, supposed to be, but we lost it
And all of our memories, so close to me, just fade away
All this time you were pretending
So much for my happy ending
So much for my happy ending
Where had they gone so wrong? At first she was the one who had visions of curtains and cookie jars, damn it. She was the one who looked at him with all the longing and he'd known she wanted a relationship, she wanted to settle down.
And he'd realized once he thought about it that he did to. He wanted the whole suburban dream: wife, kids, dog, house... All of it, with her. So what happened?
As soon as he'd realized he wanted that, she'd changed. Suddenly there wasn't a word of commitment from her, and all that mattered was keeping a job that was going to get her killed.
You've got your dumb friends
I know what they say
They tell you I'm difficult
But so are they
But they don't know me
Do they even know you?
All the things you hide from me
All the shit that you do
You were all the things I thought I knew
And I thought we could be
Her job. He grunted at the thought. Her death wish, more like it. And those so-called friends of hers didn't help matters. Connie, Lula, Mary Lou- they just followed Stephanie's lead. And Ranger. He didn't even want to think about Ranger. Stephanie followed Ranger's lead.
She thought he didn't know about their night together, about the stolen kisses, or that she'd spent that hellish week on the run from the Slayers with him.
Joe put his head down on the table. So many secrets, too many half-truths.
It's nice to know that you were there
Thanks for acting like you cared
And making me feel like I was the only one
It's nice to know we had it all
Thanks for watching as I fall
And letting me know we were done
She had given the right break-up speech, the right promises. Now she was gone. The only part that really hurt was the realization that although it had only been a few hours, his Stephanie had been gone for a lot longer than that. The girl he'd called Cupcake- she was long gone. And he hadn't even noticed when she disappeared.
So much for my happy ending
So much for my happy ending
