I sat calmly, my gray and ginger pelt was motionless and my body was quiet, contradicting my excited bones and my racing heart. The seemingly lazy river was sloshing in my ears, but I was too focused to notice. My front paws were dipped into the cold water, open and willing for movement. My stomach growled at me, unhappy that it hadn't been fed recently. I promised it I would have a feast tonight, I promised myself I would.
I tried to tell the time, an impossible feat without the guide of sight, leaves were wrapped around my green eyes. Suddenly, I started worrying. What if I ran out of time? What if I never caught anything? I tried to remind myself that wouldn't happen, that I wouldn't let anyone down.
time seemed to pass by and my worry grew.
Suddenly, a large fish swam into my paws! My heart skipped a beat, and I quickly clenched around it. This is what I was waiting for! It yanked me into the river in its attempted escape, and I was flung underwater. My legs furiously kicked upward, I reached the air and took a hurried gasp for breath. I tried to ground myself in the pebbles, but my feet skidded along. My grip was loosening on the fish and I forced my claws to dig into it more.
The fish swam to the bottom of the river and I was plunged underwater again, water filling my mouth and nose. I accidentally breathed in the water, and without hesitation sprang back up to air. I coughed out water, and my muscles begged for me to slow, to stop. I ignored the pain, and tried lunging forward, a hard task to do in water.
I could feel fish scales in my mouth. The fish suddenly started frantically whipping it's tail from side to side, and it brought my head with it. I tried to swim towards the direction of the shore, summoning all of my energy. Ripples and waves rolled over my body, but I kept swimming. My eyes and nose stung, and my ears were being swallowed by the water. I finally felt the sand of the shore.
I was still, shaking, I quickly regained my breath, and waited for energy to seep back into me. I then carefully walked along, I knew the path to the camp instinctively. My whiskers scraped against trees, but I pressed on. I didn't notice anything but the nervousness in my stomach.
Soon I reached camp, and a cat tapped my paw. At once I stopped, and my blindfold was removed. I greeted sight, and my eyes adjusted to the light. I walked forward and looked around, silent cats surrounded me. I scanned the crowd and spotted my mentor, her eyes were shining with pride. We nodded, and I walked forward.
I dropped the still fish in front of my paws and looked up at the leader. He nodded at me with approval, and I couldn't help but smile. Excitedness and happiness filled my body. I completed the trial. I will now get my full name.
