Chapter One

Fire, Snakes, And Cafeterias

I never thought I was a demigod.

Being one is different. It's hard. It gets you killed easily and gruesomely. It separated me from my father.

On the other hand, you get introduced to new things and new people. Being a demigod is a new concept of life. A whole different way of thinking.

But before I get to far ahead of myself, I'll start at the beginning of it all.

My name is Katara Peterson. I am 12 years old. Oh, you want to know what I look like? I'm an auburn haired girl with violet eyes. My father says I look like my dead mother. My father is a painful subject; so let's move on. I go to the Webster's Academy for Special Children est.1948. Don't let the name of the school fool you. The only reason were special is because every kid that goes here is a juvenile delinquent. And yes, that includes me.

It wasn't my fault that the gym teacher in second grade was oh-so-mean. I just had to punch her. Or in fourth grade when we went on a field trip to the Smithsonian. No one else was using that sword. Or in fifth grade, last year, well… I think you get the point.

And so, in school I am pegged as the impulsive girl.

But, enough about my past. The present is more important. I am in Mr. Carson's (otherwise known as Mr.-I-hate-my-life-so-much-I'll-take-it-out-on-poor-Johnny-Richards) science class and bored to the maximum. Who really cares about plate tectonics?

So I use my normal excuse to get out of class, even if for a moment.

"Mr. Carson?" I asked.

Mr. Carson looked up from the paragraph he was reading and said, "Yes, Katara?"

"May I use the restroom?"

I think all the teachers and kids have caught on with my excuses, but when you have ADHD and dyslexia, it's hard to pay attention in class.

Mr. Carson sighed and said, "Yes, you may"

Before I left the room, my best friend, Liam Anders, tugged on my school uniform and whispered, "Bring me back a Coke" and handed me two bucks.

Let me explain Liam. He's a boy with short blonde hair, and blue eyes, and a fondness of waking up very early. I was the first person to befriend him when he moved here two weeks ago (probably because we both have ADHD and dyslexia).

I quickly pocketed the money and raced out of the room and ran toward the cafeteria. On the way I passed Mrs. Energy's math class. Poor kids, I thought, math is even worse than science.

I soon arrived in the cafeteria. But instead of being empty (like it was supposed to be at 2:15) Ms. Samantha, the school lunch lady, was there.

I immediately froze up. If I were expelled from yet another school, I would have to go home to my father. And that's not a good thing.

But what really surprised me was what Ms. Samantha said to me, "We've been waiting for you"

I was too stunned to reply, but probably let out an idiotic "Uhhh…"

"Won't you join your mothersss's ssside, Katara? You could be very ussseful to usss," Ms. Samantha said suddenly having a lisp in her voice.

"My mother's dead!" I said stubbornly. My father had told me this many times, assuring to me that he was the only family I'd ever get. I never liked that.

"No ssshe's not. Merely sssleeping,"

Then Ms. Samantha started to change. Her clothes ripped off and in place of them were bronze armor. Her skin began to decay and was replaced by snakeskin. Her knotted blonde hair was soon turned black and shiny. And in place of her legs were… two snakes.

"I am Queen Ssssilvia! Bow down to me or die!" the snake lady said.

I had no idea what to say to that and I wasn't going to bow down, so I just stood there. Probably looking as stupid as Liam with whip cream on his face.

"You show disrespect! I shall kill you!" As she said that she charged at me with a sword.

I quickly moved away wondering how I missed the sword in her hand, but before I could do anything, she charged at me again.

This time I was prepared and I kicked her hard.

She merely said "Isss that all you've got?"

The snake lady kept charging until she got me in the arm, and blood rushed out immediately. I squealed and backed up into the kitchen, right in front of the stove.

The snake lady ran into the kitchen with me and stated, "Prepare to die!" She took a bow that appeared out of nowhere and let lose an arrow aimed for my head, which I saw just in time and ducked. The arrow hit the stove and the stove exploded into a million pieces. Soon a fire was spreading.

"Think before you cross me." After she said that Queen Silvia disappeared.

I had other things to worry about than the fact that she was gone, like the fact that the school cafeteria was on fire!

I ran to the nearest fire alarm and pulled it down, and it began to ring, then I ran over to the fire to inspect it. I know it was stupid, but it sounded like a good idea at the time.

As I approached the fire, I began to cough, but I kept going.

I soon discovered that I had no idea what to do, and simply stood there until I felt a tug in my gut and I instinctively raised my hand.

Almost immediately a vine sprouted out of the cafeteria floor and hurled itself into the fire. More came, but none were destroying the fire.

Soon enough the fire got bigger and I ran outside, not knowing what to do.

"KATARA!" I heard Liam scream my name. I ran toward him and the rest of my class who were huddled by the sign that read. "Welcome to Webster's Academy for Special Children. Located in Chicago, Illinois"

Mr. Carson then asked me if I was okay, and he filled me in on what happened while I was gone. Something about a fire alarm and vines and mysteriously no damage done. The rest of the day was a daze. All the kids were sent back to their dorms for the night, and most obeyed. Including me. After the encounter with the snake lady I was tired and crawled into bed and said goodnight to my roommate, Adriana Kaman.

The peace didn't last for long.

I woke up the next day remembering an odd dream that was quickly fading from my conscious mind. Something about a war. It reminded me of Mrs. Carwat's Latin class, but I wasn't going to tell anyone, lest they think I pay attention in class.

The school day went relatively well, considering I only got one detention. Soon lunch rolled along and I walked in remembering the encounter with the snake lady, and shuddering at the memory. I tried to push it out of my head and sat down next to Liam and Adriana.

"Hello Katara!" Adriana said, bubbling like her usual self.

"Hi," I murmured back not really in the mood to talk.

Lunch at our table went by quietly, until Adriana excused herself to go to the bathroom, then Liam started asking questions.

"You started the fire didn't you?" he asked his eyes narrowing with suspicion.

"No, the snake lady did,"

"What snake lady?"

I covered my mouth, quickly realizing what I'd done.

"Tell me," Liam growled. Wow, this was a side of Liam I'd never seen before.

I told him about my "little meeting" with the snake lady, and I got the strangest reaction ever, he nodded like he was agreeing and said something about dracaenae.

"So the snake lady was a dracaenae, and she wanted to kill me?"

"Yeah. Pretty much."

"Why?"

Liam ignored me and surprised me with seven words, "We need to get you to camp."

Review plz! I need to know that some one has read it!
