Title: My Sweet Jesse
Walter opens the doors to the storage unit and closes it behind him. He turns on the light and looks at the giant pile of money before him. He picks up one of the stacks and flips through it like a deck of cards. He thinks about what Skyler asked him. "How big does this pile have to be?"
He places two black duffel bags on the floor and fills them as much as he can with money. He takes one look back at the huge pile of cash before he slowly closes the door.
Walter sets the two black bags full of money down on the porch just out of eye shot. He knocks on Jesse's front door as he remembers all the parties Jesse had here in the beginning. When their operation was new. "Jesse, it's me open up." He says as he places a hand on the glass and looks inside. He squints his eyes but sees no movement inside. "Jesse, open up it's me." He says again but there is no answer. He slowly turns the doorknob and the door opens abruptly. He goes inside and slowly closes the door behind him. "Jesse, are you here? I came to talk." The house smells like a mixture of fresh paint and cigarettes.
Walter slowly walks up the stairs and his horrified by what he sees. Jesse is passed out on his bedroom floor; pale white and shirtless. Walter immediately runs over to where his friend lay lifeless on the ground. He urgently tries to lift his body from behind. "Jesse! Jesse!" He says and he gently slaps his friend's face.
He looks to Jesse's side and sees a used needle on the ground. He picks it up and throws it across the room shattering it against the wall. "Damn it Jesse." He says as he starts to cry. He notices the leather tourniquet still tied tightly around Jesse's arm.
He looks into his friend's face from above.
"Open your eyes Jesse, that's it. Open them." Jesse's eyes are half lidded. Walter pries one open with his fingers. Jesse's eyes are constricted and bloodshot. White fluid unexpectedly drips from the corner of Jesse's mouth. Walter quickly wipes it away with his sleeve. He holds his friend from behind. Jesse's head lies on his chest as he wraps his arms around his partner and cradles his limp body.
"I'm here Jesseā¦I'm here." He says as tears start to stream down his face. He kisses Jesse softly on the cheek when suddenly Jesse tries to speak.
"Mr. White, I would never count the days until your cancer came back. I'm so sorry your wife said that." Jesse says with slurred speech, almost incomprehensible.
"Shhh, it's okay now Jessie, don't talk. I'm gonna get you some help." He grabs his phone and starts to dial when he suddenly feels Jesse's body go limp in his arms. "Jesse stay with me, stay with me Jesse." He places his fingers on his friend's neck checking for a pulse but there is no sign of life. "Nooooooo!" He yells. The room is filled with silence as Walter sits isolated for a few moments rocking his friend back and forth in his arms. He gently runs his hand over Jesse's short cropped hair, desperately wishing he could turn back time. "Jesse, my sweet Jesse. It's okay. You're gonna be okay, Jesse. Where you're going no one else has to die. Just like you wanted. Just like with the train, Jesse, no one has to die. It was all your idea. You saved those conductors." He says as he continues rocking his friend's lifeless body gently. "You're free now. No one can hurt you anymore, can they? I bet you never knew how free you could be, did you, Jesse?" He says sobbing as he continues rocking; leaving sweet kisses all over Jesse's face. "You're free from all of this now Jesse."
