A\N: So, it took me a long time and a lot of thinking to finally post this story. I have written Chicago Justice stories in the past but deleted them as I didn't have ideas to finish them. With this story I'm almost certainly going to be able to finish it as I have a very good idea of the direction the story is going in. A huge thank you to mu friend and beta-reader for helping me out.

Chapter 1
"Has the jury reached a verdict?"
"We have your honour; we find the defendant not guilty on the charge of murder in the second degree."
As the defendant sighed with relief Peter sighed with frustration. Not only had he let a man who he was surely guilty of murder go free, but he let a bogus defense win in the process. Without even turning to look at his assistant he grabbed his briefcase and left the courthouse. As this was a high-profile case, he was bombarded by media right outside the courthouse, everyone anxious to hear the verdict. After making a very brief statement Peter walked away without answering any questions. After arriving back at his office Peter got started on his next case and before he knew it, it was almost nine o'clock. He knew he needed to get home.
"Anna," He walked into the condo. He made his way into their bedroom and saw her lying in bed and glaring at him. He gulped; he knew he had something coming. She had been on bed rest for two weeks already due to complication in her pregnancy and she was getting angrier about it by the day, "Look," He started out, "I lost the case and then I just lost track of time! If you just give me a few minutes I can-"
"Oh no!" Anna shook her head as she very carefully got up and walked over to him, "We're talking now! She demanded. She took his hand and led him back towards the bed, "You were supposed to be home two hours ago! You told me that you hated it when your father working late and left early for the office. You promised me this would be different. I do not want our son growing up not knowing you! When a jury verdict doesn't go our way it is frustrating, I know that. But we have much more important things to worry about right now," She took his hand and placed It on her abdomen, "This baby needs both parents. I can't and don't want to do this alone Peter. I want us to work out. I love you. You though have got to promise no more late nights at the office. You and I both know the work you do late at nights is ninety percent of the time stuff that can wait. When it's not when you're in the middle of a big case then I'll understand, and when I go back to work, we'll figure out who comes home or picks the baby up from daycare."
Peter sighed, "Anna, I'm not…." He stopped. She was right. He knew he needed to do better. He wanted her to be able to rely on him, "I promise," He leaded in and kissed her. "I love you and our son. I want to be the father he deserves. However, just so you know I think my father did an okay job considering it was only him raising my sister and I- "
Anna raised her eyebrows at him. In the five years she'd known him she'd hardly heard Peter say anything decent about his father. She wasn't ever sure if, on the two times a year they talked on the phone Peter had ever mentioned her or the baby. "Well that's new. What made you change your mind?"
"I think once I became a lawyer and realized what the hours could be, I knew. I just could never bring myself to admit it. I know my father loves me but growing up with him as my father wasn't ideal. He had very high expectations and when my attention turned away from academics towards baseball, he wasn't happy. He's the reason I went to University first instead of going straight into the MLB from high school. He wouldn't stop letting me know that baseball wasn't forever. Turns out he was right and when I finally agreed to talk to him, he handed me an application to law school. After I finished law school, he tried to get me to go back to New York to work in the DA's office. He pulled strings and actually got me a job as an assistant A.D.A in the trial division where he worked. He's basically a legend there, I knew I couldn't compete with that. I think he was always disappointed I turned down the job, of course we never talked about it. We never really talk about anything, especially feelings."
"Well it's never too late," Anna looked at him, "Call him and invite him to Chicago for a visit, tell him he has a grandson that's going to be born soon? Does he know that? Has he ever seen you in the courtroom?"
"That's harder then it seems Anna." Peter sighed, "I know you want me to talk to him but…"
"At least let me call him then and tell him about the baby. He deserves to know that."
Anna knew she didn't have a normal childhood either, after being abandoned at a police stations shortly after being born she spent her childhood in the foster care system. Then, at the age of fourteen she was adopted by her foster parents of two years. She had a great relationship with them as well as her two older foster sisters.
"I told him about the baby when we talked three months ago," Peter assured her, "And he hasn't seen me in court, but his friend Paul Robinette has and I'm sure he'd told him all about me."
"Right," Anna smiled, "I remember that," She said remembering when Ben Stone's old assistant A.D.A appeared as defense council agansit them a few years ago.
"So…: Peter stood up and began getting undressed, "How have you been today?"
"Sore and tired," Anna admitted, "I want this pregnancy to be over already! But I'm also really scared. I mean what if something happens and he ends up in danger. If anything happens to him, I'm never going to be able to forgive myself," She admitted as she began to cry.
Peter finished taking off his shirt and walked over to the bed and gently took her into his arms. "The doctor told us that the bed rest is to prevent anything from happening, and as long as your blood pressure stays down you shouldn't go into labour before your C-section in three weeks." He reassured her, "I know it's scary, I can't imagine how scared you must feel. I promise you though I will do everything I can to make sure you two area alright. I'm not going anywhere." He lifted up her shirt and kissed her large abdomen smiling as he felt his son either kick or punch against his lips., "If that's a punch we could be looking at a great pitcher." He smiled looking up at her. He couldn't wait to teach his son about baseball and eventually teach him how to play and take him to Chicago Cubs games.
"Oh," Anna rolled her eyes and sighed, "I swear if you force him into baseball to much he's going to rebel and hate the sport. However, I did find order something I think you'll like," Anna reached for her IPad, "You know I hate enabling your obsession with the Chicago Cubs but- "
Peter began tickling her, "Obsessed huh? Don't you remember I used to play for them? I can show you my trophy case again if you want."
Anna kissed him and smirked, "Yes I know you have a World Series ring, a Rookie of the year award and the Cy Young award. Now look at this," She pulled up the screen and showed him a onesie version of the Chicago Cubs jersey, which on the back had his old number as well as his last name. "You can customize them so I may have ordered some in varying sizes so he'll have one at least until his first birthday. I also ordered all of the other Chicago Cubs baseball things you wanted."
Peter kissed her again and then began rubbing her abdomen. He was still in awe every time he could see a little footprint or handprint appear. It gave him tremendous joy to think that in three weeks he'd be a father. Having a family was something he'd long thought he'd be to old for. Even when he met Anna, he never imagined he ended up with her, he knew she was way out of his league, not to mention nearly twenty years younger than he was. He still had no idea how he ever managed to get her to fall in love with him, He wasn't complaining though, he loved Anna to the world and back.
"You still want to do something for me?" Anna looked up at him, "Because I could go for a soothing bath and a nice massage. I know we can't use the jets in our whirlpool tub, but it is meant for two people," She smiled and winked. She was well aware of the fact that them not being able to be intimate together was having an effect on Peter. Even though the doctor had told them that sexual intercourse would be okay Peter wasn't going to take any chances. Ever since she'd been rushed to the hospital two weeks ago, he'd been extra worried and protective of her. Although it drove her crazy most of the time, she knew it came out of love.
"Anna-"
"This is what I need Peter. It's nothing to much just a massage," She looked at him seriously, "I know you're worried but trust me to know my own body. I know you could never hurt me even if you wanted too. I love you," She kissed him deeply. She withdrew her lips and was just about to tell him to start the bath him his cell phone rang.
"Peter Stone," Peter answered on the second ring, he knew a call at this hour couldn't be good. He just had no idea how bad it was going to be.
