Forgiveness

By Jade Bear

I own nothing.

This oneshot is about Sokka dealing with the fact he blames himself for Yue's death and working things out. Please R&R.

My first Fanfic. No flames they burn.

Sokka wandered from camp unable to sleep because of the full moon dangling from the sky. He was walking through the long wild grass and flowers thinking of Yue. He felt frustrated with her, but he knew he could never hate her no mater how hard he tried. He sighed, "What are you trying to tell me?" he asked the sky. "First you say you'll always be with me then you tell be I didn't protect you. I hate it why to you have to play with my head!" his voice rising. The anger he had kept inside and refused to see was coming out all at once. "Is it true? That you blame me for what happened!" Tears of his frustration and sadness threatened to fall. He fell on his knees covering his face with his hands to hide the silent tears. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I know its all my fault."

A soft breeze carrying the smell of lilac tossed the grass and made Sokka feel a sudden wave of drowsiness. The next thing he knew he was fast asleep on the ground breathing heavily.

Sokka looked around he was next to the coy pond in the Northern Water Tribe. He got up and turned around. His eyes widened in shock. No, it can't be. Yet right in front of him was Yue, flesh and blood, wearing a beautiful white dress, tears steaming down her perfect face. "Sokka I never meant to hurt you so much." Where the first words she said. He wrapped her in his arms. "Its okay."

"I said those things at the swamp because I thought if you where mad at me and hated me it wouldn't be so hard for you to be without me." She sobbed into his shirt "But it only made you blame yourself more. I never meant it. Not any of it."

"You didn't?"

"None of it. Please forgive me."

"I already did," he whispered in her ear.

"Then forgive yourself." She pulled away holding his shoulders staring straight into his eyes.

"I let you die Yue." He hung his head.

"It isn't your fault. It was what had to be done." She held him close again. "Your so brave Sokka. I know you can find the strength to forgive yourself."

"You are so much stronger though" he let his tear fall freely, not for himself, but for her "to face the fear of being with someone you don't love, who doesn't really love you. All for the good of you people."

"I would have given up if it hadn't been for you. I started to stop believing in true love. Then you came and showed be what those two words really mean. You gave me hope. I can't stand to see you hurt so much. Please promise me you'll forgive yourself, Sokka."

"Will it make you happy?"

"Yes."

"Then I promise"

"Good" she looked him in the eyes again "Now let go of me."

"What?" he said not fully sure he understood.

"I will always hold you in my heart Sokka, but you need to move on. I want you to be happy even if it's not with me."

"I don't think I can."

"I know you can. You don't have to forget me. Just make room for another."

"Will it make you happy?"

"More than anything."

"Then I promise." He wiped the tears from her face.

"Good"

Then they kissed. It was a kiss full of longing and sadness but also one of love and pledge.

Sokka woke and stretched his arms. He stood and looked up at the moon thinking of the dream it sent him.

"I always keep my promises," he whispered to the sky. Then he turned and walked back to camp, a small sad smile on his face. You will always be in my heart, Yue. For the first time found internal peace with himself. Finally he had forgiven himself.
