Disclaimer: I do not own Death Note, manga or anime, or any of the characters. However, I will never forgive the writers for killing L. Never.

He knew when it was happening.
He could tell by the sudden tension of the back, the stiffening of the muscles, the way a sentence went unfinished.
He knew, and he was glad.
He watched the fall, almost in slow motion, from a chair so often occupied by its eccentric owner. He observed, almost clinically, the wide-eyed stare of the same: staring blankly, waiting to hit the floor…
But not surprised. Never surprised. Nothing ever surprised L.
Not even his own death.
So Light Yagami dove forward and caught his nemesis before the dying man hit the ground.
Time slowed. Voices, panicked, faded into the background. No one could understand what was going on. Except for Kira.
Kira knew perfectly well what was going on, because it was what he had wrought. Chaos, but perfection. Tragedy, yet triumph.
Light held L in his arms and stared down into the detective's pale face, met those huge black eyes. Stared down at him and smiled, because he had won.
And noticed idly that L's eyes weren't actually black anymore.
They were blue. Dark, dark blue, with small dark pupils. Normal eyes, with the exception of the ever-present black smudges beneath them.
Normal eyes that stared up at him, heart-breaking in their humanity, as if to demand why? Why have you done this to me? Except that L's eyes didn't ask that question, because L was never surprised. And he knew that Light had killed him. Knew that Kira had killed him.
So what those dark blue eyes really said was, I see you. I know you. I've always known you. I've always known that you would be the one to kill-
Light thought, as he watched L's eyes close slowly in death, that he might even be able to hear the dying man's heart, pounding its last beats.
