A/N: I'm new to the Bleach writing front. I wrote this for a friend, who gave me the prompt 'fairytale' for Ulquihime. I am quite the fan of these two, but I still don't think I've done them any justice. Also, there are spoilers for the latest chapters. I hope you all enjoy it~

No Happy Endings

She was of fairytales.

Of happy endings and sweet kisses and heroes that do anything for the one they love.

Of "never let me go"s and "I'll save you every time"s and "do anything for you"s.

He was of darkness.

Of sad endings and heartlessness and heroes--what heroes?--that must be knocked down.

Of "I do not understand"s and "there's nothing left here"s and "I'll show you despair"s.

When they collided, he was left intrigued and curious. She confounded him. Her light, her brevity, her ability to not give up hope. Why would one cling so desperately to something that seemed so unlikely to happen that the end result would do nothing but bring pain?

Somehow--perhaps it was her smiles and heart--his interest grew. The world she saw, the world she lived in… he wanted to see it. He had to see it, to understand her. She was a puzzle that he just could not crack.

Is that the reason he is reaching to her now? The reason he so desperately wants to touch her? If he were to catch a glimpse of her vision through the simple act of touching, perhaps then he would understand. It is the first time, and the last time, he truly notices her.

She is beautiful. Thinking back, he realizes that she'd always been thus.

Her fingers extend. They weave toward him, shaking and yet she is unafraid. A moment, a single moment. He feels her warmth, the anticipation as she draws closer. So close…

And then he is gone. Dust in the wind.

(he was never one for fairytale endings)
