Behind Closed Doors

Under the light of the twin moons, a city rested in the shadow of a mountain. It was surrounded by two stone walls and towers, separating the outer city from the inner city. Guards patrolled the walls and streets as large bonfires burned atop the towers, providing light as archers searched over the walls for danger.

The outer wall was made of stone buildings with a large plaza surrounded by stores in the center. The inner city was made of much larger and extravagant houses with a large beautiful garden in the center.

From one of the mansions shined light from a window. The room was average in size with a fireplace filling the air with light and warmth. Above the fireplace hung a pair of twin swords covered in runes and had a gem set above the handle. Across the fireplace were shelved filled with books and effects. The stone floor was covered by a large red carpet from the door to a desk. A man sat at the desk and was sorting and signing the vast amount of papers and documents that covered the desk.

The sound of knocking interrupted the man's work.

"Enter."

The door opened to reveal a large, muscular man with a long beard and black hair. The man had piercing blue eyes with an old battle scar going down his left cheek. He wore clothes and armor made out of a thick pelt. His belt held a large knife, a pouch, and a canteen and on the back of his right hand was a pair of bull horns. On his back were a large wood and steel shield and a sheathed claymore.

The man saluted* and slightly bowed his head.

"My lord."

"Report."

"We have found the mage my lord. She was hidden in the forest outside a village called New Haven. The rumors about the mages research proved to be correct. However the mage discovered us and fought back, injuring many of my men and killing two of them. When we closed in she set the entire cabin ablaze. We tried to subdue her but she killed herself before we could capture her. We doused the flames and found some surviving notes and equipment however much of it was unrecoverable."

"How unfortunate."

"Not all is lost my lord."

"Well my lord, the mage had an apprentice. When we attacked the cabin she was nowhere to be found. The girl lived with her master for ten years and may have been given the research by her master and ordered to run or may have seen or even worked on the research with her master and could aid us. That would explain the fierce fight the mage put up before her death."

"I see, then that means this girl is of the utmost importance, find her and bring her to me."

"Yes, my lord, however my men are not in well enough for a chase and trek through the grasslands and forests. I have sent my Seekers and Sensors to begin tracking her but I need more men for a thorough search."

"Very well, you shall have your men, arrangements shall be made and they will be ready in three day times. I expect weekly reports and just so we're clear, no harm is to come to the girl."

"Yes, my lord."

"The large man saluted again and turned to open the door.

"While you're here, how goes the training?"

"The Mystic you hired is making quick work of the slaves and training is easy though lengthy but without the research you will not get results you desire. If I may say my lord, are you sure this is a good idea, that Mystic could turn that army against us in an instant."

"Don't worry, it's taken care of. Now leave, I want a report on the search every week."

"Yes, my lord." The man said before leaving the study.

The lord returned to looking out the window to his study.

"Soon my goal shall be within my grasp."

The man turned to the window as he watched the sun rise over the mountains.
