I revised the time this took place to make it more plausible. I also changed some details I've learned about since this story was first posted.

BTW, this is an AU fic set after the tournament in which Goku fought ChiChi.

Goku walked around after the latest World Martial Arts Tournament. The prize, a
million dollars, was in his pocket, but he didn't care. He was going to talk to
Bulma. For a few years, he hadn't been able to look at her without feeling his
stomach clench up. It had taken him a few weeks to figure out what it was, but
he hadn't found the nerve to tell her when he had. After the tournament,
however, he had decided to tell her, so he'd asked her to meet him on the south
side of the stadium. Privately.
When he got there, Bulma was waiting for him.
"What did you want to talk to me about, Goku?" she asked when she saw him.
"Well…I wanted to ask you something. See, there's this woman I think I'm in
love with, but I'm not really sure about it. I can't look at her without my
stomach clenching up, and I can't stop thinking about her. I wanted to get your
opinion on the subject."
"Well, it looks like you had the right idea. Those sound like the classic
symptoms for being in love." Here she paused for a minute. "What's she like? I
don't want her name right now unless you want to tell me, but I do want to know
what she's like."
"Well, she's smart, beautiful, short-tempered, good natured, strong, though she
doesn't look it, she can hold a grudge for years, then drop it the moment you
apologize, and she can invent things that you would wonder how you did
without."
"What types of things has she invented, Goku?" Bulma asked.
"Well, she's come up with capsules-saw my first capsule house with her-, dragon
radar, that type of thing." Goku was now looking at Bulma, whose mouth was wide
open.
"You mean me, don't you?" she said when she had recovered somewhat.
"No, I mean the chicken in the freezer at home. Of course I mean you. You were
the one who showed me the world-what it was like, what it could do to you, and
how to get back at it. Without you, I'd still be wandering around the woods without
even knowing there was anything outside the valley my house was in. Plus,
you're a great person. I couldn't think of life without you." Goku responded.
They both sat there looking at each other. Goku was starting to get nervous
when Bulma let out a cry.
"What? I didn't think love was bad." Goku said, covering her mouth. Bulma just
pulled his hand away from her face, said, "I love you, too," and then caught
him up in a kiss…
