Summary:
YOU know that you shouldn't intrude. The other's vulnerability isn't meant to be noticed. You know, but you don't want to leave him either. Not like this, not when Roy's best confidant just… just. So you stay; you stay and hope it is more than enough.
"Edward, I think I might have the characteristics of a Catholic," says Roy, finally acknowledging the presence that is you.
You lift your eyebrows, trying to process what Roy just said…a Catholic?
"Yes, a Catholic." Roy responds, though you are sure you didn't utter your surprise out loud. "I can't help but ask what did I do wrong?"
And isn't that just icing on the cake? Having your Colonel suffering without you being able to do anything about it. And again you hear Roy say, "I can't fix the light bulb." You continue to be confused until it clicks for you. You remember a long time ago what Maes has jokingly said. If the light bulb was broken, a Catholic would just stand in the dark and wonder… and now Maes has gone. Gone and selfishly taken the light with him, but…
"You aren't a Catholic, Roy." You begin to say. "You don't have to stay in the dark. Just hold onto the stairs and I'll climb. I'll climb and fix the light bulb for you."
Finally, finally Roy looks up to your eyes. You see the glitters that refuse to fall. "Together?" He asks before putting his head back down. That irritates you though, hearing that doubt in his voice.
"Ye, you bastard. Together." You kiss the dip on his neck. For atonement, for acceptance, and for love. Yes, even for love.
