"Looking Back III"
Written by: Melissa (Doc)
NOTES: The Looking Back series deals with six stories. Each one being dedicated to each of the main characters. These were written during the second season, so it obviously doesn't flow with the past few seasons.
Part III- Sam
Sam stood on the side of the room eating some cookies. He looked around at everyone he could see. He saw his best friend Josh standing alone; he could tell that he was thinking about something. He saw CJ sitting on a chair staring off into space. Then he saw Jed and Leo having a deep conversation about something that Sam could tell was personal.
Sam has been through a lot of things since being in the White House. But he has never had to go through anything by himself. He had support from everyone. When he started working in the White House, he knew a lot. But during the last four years, he has learned more things from Toby then he ever imagined was out there. Toby has been Sam's teacher and big brother, and he didn't want to lose that.
Josh got Sam to join the campaign, and it was the best thing he ever did. Sam was the youngest member of the senior staff, but he likes to think he's also grown into a better man for it.
Sam was the last one to find out about the Presidents MS of the senior staff. He was mad at first, but never told anyone. He kept it hidden because he knew that it would hurt the President, and that was the last thing that he wanted to do. He saw the pain in everyone's eyes when they found out. It wasn't the fact that the President didn't tell them about it earlier. It was the fact that he tried to hide it from everyone. He knew he was sick. He passed out and told them all that it was the flu. The thing that made people mad is that he meant to hide it. That is what Sam believes.
Sam has never really had a stable family, but working here gave him the family that he always wanted. He has his brother's Josh and Toby, his sister CJ, and his two dads', Leo and Jed. These people care for Sam and he knows it.
Since being in the White House, Sam has: Slept with a call girl, found out something bad about his dad, saw his best friend almost get killed, and had writers' block. But every time something happened to him, he always found that there was someone to talk to about it.
"Here it is," Donna yelled as she turned up the TV.
"With 70 of the vote, we are happy to announce Josiah Bartlet as the winner…." The newscaster said. Just then the whole room went up in a roar. Everyone started hugging and laughing.
"Thank you god," Sam said to himself.
Josh came over and hugged Sam. Then the two men ran over to CJ and they all exchanged hugs.
Sam went over to the President as Josh went toward Donna.
"Congratulations Mr. President," Sam said as he gave Jed a hug.
"Thank you son. You are part of the reason this happened, I am very proud of you," Jed said as he patted Sam on the face.
"Thank you sir," Sam said with a smile.
Sam might think that he now knows everything out there. But he's sure Toby still had a few more things to teach him before term two was up.
The End
