This is the second part to His Mechanic. I debated adding it as a chapter, but it didn't feel right. If you've not read the first part, fret not, you can read this as a stand alone in it's own right. All you need to know is that Ed is still in the North on his travels.
Winry rung her hands nervously. It had been four months since she'd last seen Ed and fixed up his leg. She'd spent the week with him before travelling home, smiling like a loon and waving excitedly. Subsequently, it had been about four months and two weeks since she'd last had her period. She rested her hands over her small round bump and felt her heart fall. She was finally going to have to tell Ed. So far, she'd managed to avoid it.
She hadn't realised she was late for a good week or two. Then she'd started chucking her guts up every morning like clockwork. Granny knew exactly what was going on and it still took her nearly three weeks to persuade Winry to see the doctor. Winry was terrified to tell Ed. They were still kids really and he'd not long been on his travels. She'd managed to keep it out of conversation every time he rang, much to Granny's disapproval. She didn't want to worry him and then the longer it went the more she felt like she couldn't tell him over the phone. She was dreading the call she'd get asking her to come and fix him up again.
But it happened and here she was, at the same station she'd been at just over four months ago. Ed had told her he'd gone back to the same house he'd been staying in the last time she'd visited, thinking it was easier for her and that he could catch up with all his friends too. Winry made her way there with a heavy heart. She had no idea what to expect when Ed discovered that they were expecting. It didn't take long before she was knocking on the door and smiling at Max as he opened it.
"Winry! It's so good to see you!" Max grinned, stepping aside so that she could come through.
"It's good to see you too," Winry said, her nerves almost getting the best of her.
Max turned and yelled into the house. "Hey Ed, your mechanic's here!"
Winry couldn't help the small smile that graced her lips. It was a running joke, nearly all the housemates seeing through the word 'mechanic' ten seconds after Winry had walked through the door last time. Harvey had even made a comment to Ed about how attractive Winry was and almost got himself knocked out.
"Win!" Ed beamed as he came flying round the corner and into the room.
"Hey Ed," Winry said, doing her best to act normal.
Ed's brow twitched a little but he stalked forwards to give her a kiss anyway. She felt all the tension leave her body at the sweetness of his kiss. She sighed and wound her arms around his neck, but careful not to get too close in case he felt the bump that was their growing child.
"Thanks for coming out so soon," he said, giving her a sheepish grin.
"Well, what's the point in having a mechanic for a fiancée if you don't get special treatment every now and then?" she chuckled.
Ed laughed and gave her another quick kiss. "My thoughts exactly."
"It's obviously not as bad as last time either, since you're able to walk around," Winry said, already in assessment mode.
"Just a little bump is all, but I can feel like something isn't right," Ed said.
Winry swallowed and nodded. "Shall we go upstairs then? Is there a room we can use?"
"Yeah, Ed's old room is still empty, take that one," Jackson said.
"Thanks," Winry said, picking up her bags and rushing up the stairs.
Harvey whistled. "Girl can't wait to get you alone," he snickered.
"Shut up Harv," Ed huffed, running after Winry and trying to work out what was wrong with her.
"Win, you okay?" Ed asked as he entered the room. She'd sorted out her bags and taken all her equipment out but her coat was still on.
"I'm fine," she said, her voice a little high.
"Winry, what's going on?" Ed asked, coming to stand in front of her.
"I need to tell you something and I'm not sure how," she mumbled.
"Okay," Ed said with a frown. He waited patiently for her to say something but nothing came.
Winry looked into his deep golden eyes and felt her own tear up. "I'm sorry Ed," she whispered.
"For what?" he croaked, looking absolutely terrified as he watched several tears fall down her face. "Winry? What is it?" He was panicking now.
Winry kept her eyes on his face as she took her coat off, she unzipped the old hoodie that had been Ed's and discarded it and then she pulled down the zipper of her overalls. Ed frowned as he watched her roll it down her body like she did every time she worked. His gaze flicked to her flat little stomach only to find that it wasn't flat anymore. His eyes blew wide and he looked up at Winry's tear stained face.
"Win?" he murmured. "Are you trying to tell me your...?" He couldn't finish the sentence.
Winry nodded, pursing her lips together and trying not to fall apart.
Ed stared at her in shock and awe. He tentatively reached out and placed his palm against her small round stomach, letting out a soft little chuckle. He looked up at Winry and found her staring back at him in disbelief.
"Winry?" Ed whispered, waiting for her to say something.
"I thought...I didn't know... I was worried you'd be upset..." she stammered, offering him half a shrug.
Ed cracked and smile, a small chuckle passing his lips. A tear slid down his face and he fell to his knees. He placed a tender kiss on her belly and lent his forehead against it, gripping her hips with his hands.
Winry grasped his hands with her own, letting her tears overtake her. She sobbed uncontrollably through sheer relief. Her hands found Ed's head and she ran her fingers through his hair, still amazed that he'd taken the news so well. After a few minutes he stood up, bringing his hands to her face and crashing his lips down on hers. He kissed her senseless for several minutes.
"You nutcase," he mumbled against her lips. "Why on earth would you think I'd take it that badly?" He laughed. "Technically I've actually managed human transmutation, albeit with a little help..."
"Ed!" Winry cried, slapping his shoulder and finding herself laughing along. She sniffed as he wiped her eyes with the pads of his thumbs. "I don't know. I think the hormones overtook me and I blew everything out of proportion."
"Really? You think?" he sniggered.
"Oh shut up!" she growled playfully. "It took me several weeks to get my head around it and then I just panicked. I mean, it's not like we're that old. And you haven't been gone all that long, I figured you wouldn't be back for a while...and a baby changes everything."
"Well, that's true. I wasn't planning on coming back home yet. I had no idea when I'd be back," Ed confessed. "But plans change and things happen. And I wouldn't miss this for the world Win. It's been hard enough missing you..."
"I didn't want to force you home," she whispered.
"Winry, getting pregnant and having my kid is not forcing me home," Ed chuckled. "Besides, it's not like you got pregnant all by yourself. I should take at least half the blame."
Winry sighed and wrapped her arms around him, snuggling into his chest. Ed pulled her in closer and nuzzled her hair with his nose. He loved the feel of the little bump between them, he felt like the luckiest man in the world.
"Come on, let's get that leg of yours looked at," Winry said with a sigh.
"Sure, but I don't know if there's much wrong with it. I kind of called you out because I missed you," Ed said, grinning madly at her.
"What?!" Winry squeaked. "I came all this way for nothing?!"
"I wouldn't say that. You came all this way to tell me about the baby we're going to be having," he said. "If I hadn't wanted to see you so badly, when would have told me?"
Winry couldn't look him in the eye. "I don't know," she muttered.
"So maybe we can call a truse? I lied to get you here and you lied about the baby," he said.
"I didn't lie!" Winry cried.
"No, you just omitted the truth," he said. "I'm going to be a dad...!" He suddenly stammered. "Oh my God! Win...that's really fucking scary!"
Winry laughed softly. "Ed, you're going to be the best damn dad there ever was."
"You think so?" he whispered.
"I know so," she smiled.
I've felt for a little while now that Ed and Winry would have had their first baby before they got married, I don't know why but its just a feeling I have. So I decided to right it up. Hope you enjoyed it :)
