She had a hard time with the Sir thing at first. Even in later months. It took time for it to register in her mind that he was no longer her commanding officer and still, when she had come to terms with it, her mouth occasionally disobeyed her.
In public it was always 'Sir' and 'General.' Both of them were very private people and desired to keep their relationship a secret from prying eyes. Similarly, she was 'Colonel' and 'Carter.' It worked for them. And it came easily, from years of practice.
Separating the public and the private was somewhat second nature to them, having concealed their feelings for so long. As for the sharing of feelings between each other, well, once the dam had been broken it was surprisingly easy to be open.
She, especially, took a rather naughty pleasure in letting her tongue slip back into the old formality in certain intimate moments. She knew he secretly liked it too, hearing the honorific slip from her tongue in such incongruous and inappropriate circumstances. In such a tone it seemed almost like a sin. And to him, Sam and sin were such a delicious combination.
In these moments words like 'Colonel' were more of a teasing endearment, which would come back to haunt them in a more formal setting. But that was all part of the game. To the outside observer, nothing was amiss or reprehensible in their behaviour or actions; however they were both long adept at conversing with their eyes.
They didn't need the words. They had never needed the words. After years of waiting, hoping, all that was needed was the honorific and the knowledge of the depth of their feelings.
And it was enough.
