Whole Again
James held the door for Lily to pass through, pressing a kiss to her temple as she did so.
She settled onto the sofa, Harry wrapped up in blankets in her arms. It was so good to be home. James flitted around the room, tidying away the evidence of their rush out of the door. Lily watched him with a small smile on her face.
"James."
He froze, turning his head to look at her.
"Leave that. Come sit down," she murmured, barely repressing a giggle when he dropped the cushion he'd been straightening and moved straight over to the sofa, sitting carefully beside her so he didn't jostle the baby in her arms.
She sat forward a little and he wrapped his arm around her back.
"Look at what we made," she whispered, pulling the blanket just slightly away from Harry's face. "He's perfect."
James nodded. "I can't believe⦠it feels so strange, that he's finally here."
Lily grinned, pressing her lips to James'. "We're a family now."
"I love you, Lils."
Lily fell asleep, Harry still in her arms, on the sofa, her head resting against James' shoulder. James stayed away, determined to look after his family.
Sirius sat on the chair, marvelling at the little bundle in his arms.
His godson.
He was amazed that James had convinced Lily that letting him be godfather was a good idea. He wasn't sure he'd let himself be a godfather, if this was his kid.
Harry was adorable. He'd been awake when Sirius arrived, and when he'd taken him in his arms, Harry had wrapped tiny fingers around Sirius' index finger, holding on as though he knew that Sirius was important.
Lily lay on the sofa, watching him with a small smile on her face. She looked tired, understandably so, but Sirius didn't think he'd ever seen her look so beautiful.
Motherhood certainly suited her.
James entered the living room with a tea tray, and Sirius barely held himself back from making a comment about him being a regular house-wife. From the amused look on Lily's face, she knew exactly what he was thinking.
Instead of accepting the tea, Sirius said, "I should go, give you some family time."
Lily shook her head, glaring at him when he made to pass Harry over to James. "We might not be blood, Sirius, but you are family. Stay where you are, Harry likes you."
"I'm sorry."
Sirius hadn't been sure that there would be an afterlife, but he'd been simultaneously waiting and dreading seeing Lily and James again.
Lily shook her head, wrapping her arms around him. "You did your best and you loved him. That was all we could have asked."
"But -"
"But nothing," James said, shaking his head as he rested a hand on Sirius' shoulder. "You're family and you saved our boy. We missed you, mate."
Sirius felt tears falling onto his cheeks as he gripped James and Lily in a fierce embrace. As sad as he was to leave Harry and Remus behind, he knew they would be joining them eventually, hopefully a long time into the future.
One day, their family would be back together and finally whole again.
