Disclaimer: I don't own Rizzoli & Isles; I leave that to Tess Gerritsen.
Jane Rizzoli was pacing back and forth in her living room. She didn't know what she was thinking when she took a shot at Patrick Doyle after Gabriel Dean had already taken it. She could have killed him, and she knew Maura Isles would never forgive her if that happened.
Gabriel watched her pace back and forth from the couch. He never considered that this would happen. He knew what he was doing, but he was also doing his job when he shot Patrick Doyle. "Jane, she'll forgive you," Gabriel told her. "You were only doing your job."
Jane turned and glared at him. "So were you," Jane said. "She took a bullet out of Frankie once."
"You have a history, Jane," Gabriel said. "Maura can't ignore that anymore than you could."
"So what do I do?" Jane asked him.
"Well," Gabriel said, "you could calm down first of all. She just needs some time and space to think, Jane. She loves you too much to make this a dent in your friendship."
Jane stared at him. "You saw how angry she was when I tried to help," she said.
"You still called for an ambulance," Gabriel pointed out. "He was still breathing when they left for the hospital. He could still be alive; the doctors will be able to save his life."
Jane sighed and saw his point. She walked to the door.
"Where are you going?" Gabriel asked.
"To the hospital," Jane said. "I want to know how he's doing." She opened the door and before she walked out, she added, "I want to be there for Maura whether she wants me there or not."
Gabriel grinned and followed her. He locked the door behind him. You had to give credit to Jane for caring about her loved ones, he thought.
