Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter

Hermione always found herself looking up, and not simply because she was short, there was another reason. She was obsessed with more than just books, or whatever good-looking boy was popular among teenage girls that particular week. Hermione was obsessed with something much larger, so large, in fact, I doubt even she could imagine it's entirety – although it is quite possible that she could have.

She was obsessed with the stars. Their timeless beauty spoke to her in whispers that only she could hear, their divine light filling her with warmth and power. Only her meticulous eyes could unravel their secrets – only her heart could understand their whispered words. Her heart and soul were truly up in the sky – dancing with hundreds upon hundreds of stars on a black stage.

That is why Hermione Granger found herself in Hogwarts' famous Astronomy tower on that fatal night – a night similar, and yet unlike so many others.

As she craned her head backwards, trying to gaze upon the beautiful night sky, Hermione heard footsteps...

"Malfoy! What are you doing up here?" Hermione spat at the blonde Slytherin as he emerged from the trap door on the other side of the room.

"Why are you here? Mudblood!" Malfoy spat back at her.

"I – as you very well know, Malfoy – am a Prefect, and I don't answer to you! I am going to report you to Professor McGonagall for breaking curfew!"

"Oh no your not!" Malfoy threatened, "SECTUMSEMPRA!"

Hermione dodged to the side as she pulled her wand from underneath her robes, the unknown curse cracking the glass of the astronomy tower walls behind her.

"EXPELLIARMUS" screamed Hermione, a bolt of yellow light shooting from her wand towards Draco.

"PROTEGO" Malfoy countered.

Before Hermione could think she found herself kneeling against the cold glass of the astronomy tower – clear glass that made up the walls and roof of the legendary room- disarmed by her own spell.

"Well, well, well, look at the mudblood now!" Draco laughed to himself, " Don't worry, I'll say good bye to your blood-traitor boyfriend for you, bitch! STUPEFY! STUPEFY! STUPEFY!"

Three beams of light smashed into Hermione with incredible force and suddenly she found herself falling through the cold night air, shards of glass following in her wake.

For the first time, Hermione's eyes were fixed upon the ground, and she trembled in fear, she hated falling – her heart may have been in with the stars, but her mind had always been glued to the ground. She had managed to avoid the disheartening down-wards view of the astronomy tower – a difficult task, considering she was up there more than anywhere else in the castle- until now, unfortunately, it would be the last thing she ever saw.

But then she remembered. Turning herself onto her back in mid air, Hermione felt the familiar warmth of the stars modest beauty – unhindered by looming clouds or the bright moon.

It was befitting that that was the last thing that Hermione Granger ever saw, because even when she was about to die – falling from hundreds of feet in the air- her heart was dancing around the sky, shining more brightly than any other star.
