"In a moment we lost our minds here, and dreamt the world was round, a million mile fall from grace, thank god we missed the ground." – Live

The air was filled with heaviness. Gibbs could feel it all around him. The feeling of rebirth almost, that was almost the feeling described months after the Dearing bomb blast. He could feel ever footstep of the bodies around him, every breath, every thought, and every smile even.

He could feel it all…

Yet somehow it didn't feel like home anymore.

When Dearing blew up NCIS, all Gibbs had wanted was revenge. He remembered going to Dearing's home, he remembered stabbing him. Even now, months later, he felt the blood of Dearing trickling over his calloused fingers, down the knife, onto the ground never to be seen again. It was a feeling Gibbs wouldn't soon forget.

He stared at the memorial in front of him, honoring those who had perished in the Navy Yard when the blast occurred two months ago. Gibbs felt a surge of rage go through his body as he stared at the plaque before him…but slowly it calmed. He then felt nothing.

He didn't know what to feel. He knew that he should be feeling relieved. Feeling, happy, but for some reason Gibbs couldn't be happy. He looked all around him, NCIS agents, navy yard employees, and sailors alike walked around him. He stared into their hopeful eyes, their brightening smiles, their very souls it felt like even.

Finally Gibbs looked back at his team. Tony and Ziva were gathered at a food stand, eating and laughing. Abby, McGee, and Palmer were walking along a path and talking. Vance walked by on his phone and with his briefcase, waved at Gibbs' team and kept walking.

Gibbs looked at his agents. They seemed happy again. They seemed like nothing had happened. Maybe that was what they needed.

Gibbs knew in his heart of hearts that no one would ever feel one hundred percent secure at NCIS headquarters ever again. Dearing had made sure of that…it had been his final revenge. By taking away their security Dearing had indeed destroyed them like he'd planned.

But Team Gibbs was better than that, higher than that. They'd never let anyone take away what they loved. They'd never let anyone scare them. They'd forget it all happened and go on living.

Gibbs smiled and then walked off to get more coffee.

"Maybe," Gibbs thought. "That's exactly what they need…"
