Promises
Ginny was so infuriated that she wasn't concerned with the consequences of making such a loud noise in the middle of the night. A steady hummed filled the air as her wand erupted into a fit of red sparks before exploding her dresser.
Everybody woke with great urgency and their eyes fell to Ginny who was sitting in the shredded remains of clothes and wood. A rustle downstairs made each girl widen her eyes and with a last apologetic look lay back down and closed their eyes.
The door exploded with masked figures. Ginny stood up and followed them out the door without so much as a protest.
…
Lee,
Sorry I haven't written in a few days.
The letter last wrote me made me so mad, I may have exploded my dresser and have been in confinement ever since.
Please don't tell me again that I have to stay here. It is awful. We talked about leaving once remember? It was when we were in the garden and Fred nearly found us. You were lying next to me and made me promise that when I finished school I would leave the house and the restrictions and we would be properly together. Please tell me you remember?
If you do remember, why can't that start now? I am barely at school as it is, I can leave and we can start now.
Ginny.
…
With not much to do as a fresh blanket of snow engulfed the grounds Ginny sat in her room and waited for his reply. Sometimes they took days, sometimes weeks and once it took a month. But Ginny knew how to get answers quickly from Lee, her urgency and two day torture would greatly influence a response before nightfall on Sunday.
Her hands curled over the edge of the bed as she watched the window nervously. It filled quickly with dense white snow and the vision of the horizon was muffled, but she waited.
Then along the horizon a black curve signalled the owl's arrival as it bounced toward the window. Ginny leapt from the bed and opened the window, letting flakes of ice scatter along the floor. The Owl fell into the room and before it had time to take the letter off, curled under the blanket to get warm.
Ginny pulled the letter of the sleeping bird and ripped it open.
…..
Ginny,
I remember that day. I remember every day I have spent with you, the good, the great and the bad. I think about those times when I miss you most.
But you must understand the world we know is gone. But keeping our humanity? That's a choice. We are in a war Ginny; I have to stay, just like you do. I have to help wherever I can, just like I know you want to.
When the war is over, and the blood has been shed, I will find you again, and we will leave, just like I "made" you promise.
Please don't go around blowing up dressers though; I can't keep you safe where I am. I rely on you for that sort of in depth care.
I will write to you again soon.
Lee.
…..
The anger subsided within Ginny as she read and re-read the letter. She took a deep breath and starred at the broken shards of her dresser. A smile played its way onto her lips.
"I am not making any promises," she whispered to herself.
