"Hermione, stop, just stop. We know this isn't working," Ron said. They had been arguing for about thirty minutes now and Ron knew it was time to face facts.

"What isn't working?" Hermione said, fixing him an intense stare. Normally, he would have backed down, just to make her happy, but he could only do it for so long.

"This. Us," he said as he gestured between them. "All we've done since we got together six months ago is fight."

"That's how our relationship works, Ron. I knew that when we got together," Hermione said as she crossed her arms over her chest.

Ron held out his hands, "But that's the point. Relationships aren't supposed to be built on arguments and making up afterwards, Hermione."

"I know it's not going to be rainbow and butterflies. Nothing's perfect, Ron, but we do what we can to make it work," she said softly.

She extended a hand towards him and he knew what she wanted to do. She wanted to hold him close. She wanted to take all the doubt within him and put it into her. She was the one who wanted to shoulder all the despair so that he could be happy. He couldn't let her do that again.

He moved away. "No, Hermione. It's best for us, for you, to just part. We separate while we are still friends and we don't want to kill each other or run to the ends of the Earth. I don't think I could live if you came out of my life completely," he said as he looked at her sadly.

"You just want to end it, just like that?" she asked. He could see her mouth trembling, wanting to say something more but unsure of what.

He nodded. "This is only going to happen again. You can't keep trying to fix us. The plans we made together are all wrong. We need to swallow whatever pride is telling us to make this work. We have to face facts. We're just different."

He brought her into him now. He would be the one to shoulder the pain and despair she was going through now. He would be the one to take all the hate. He would be here to dry her tears. And they would be happy and better for it in the end.

Everyone thought that they were perfect for each other. They would get married, have two kids and both work at the Ministry. But that wouldn't happen now. The fairytale had gone bad.
