"Everything matters…"
Mary began to feel as if she was stuck on stupid with the way that phrase was looping in her head. She was trying to picture a teenage Marshall sitting home on a Friday night because he thought all that waiting would bring him that much closer to finding a real girlfriend. She smiled at the thought, but it also made her stomach tighten in an uncomfortable way as she realized that he had to have either rejected someone, or had them reject him before.
"Everything matters…" Mary mutters, and can tell out of the corner of her eye, Marshall froze at his desk a few feet away.
"Mare…?"
"I keep trying to understand something your dad said to me earlier on our 'stakeout'" she said, looking up at him, meeting his questioning bright blue eyes. They nudged her forward with her current train of thought.
"Ok…"
"He said you were always a soft kid and that this just wasn't what you were cut out to be. It's nauseating and fascinating at the same time" she said with an incredulous expression on her face.
"I told you I was being judged right when he got here"
"But, he really has no idea how good you are and how much I rely on you for little things like being nice to witnesses. It's just; I wonder how a guy that had the common sense to stay with his family knows so little about his son"
"It's not a big deal Mare, I'm used to it. I learned a long time ago to just do what I have to do and move on"
Mary really looked at Marshall and saw that he really didn't have a grudge against his father one bit.
"I hope you're just like him when you have your own little doofus' in training" she said smirking.
He looked at the tender expression on her face and knew that she meant it, but it confused him as well.
"I know you respect my father, but I thought you didn't really like his approach to things?"
"Yeah, but you wouldn't be the Doofus I know and love if it wasn't for him. I definitely have to thank him" she said smiling as she got up to go into Stan's office.
The Doofus she knows and loves. I think that's a start.
