Note: Kagome is a demon in this story

Pairing: Yoko/Kagome/Kurama

Author's Note: I am doing some maintenance with this story. This chapter has some major changes! I am planning on working my way through the story rewriting some of it. I am mainly focusing on parts that I don't particularly like and fixing grammar mistakes. So hopefully it will flow a lot smoother. Thanks to everyone who have been reading so far and I hope you like the changes made to Chapter One.

Crystalline Tears: Sadness

"Bye Kaede, I'll be back. I'm going to pick those herbs that we ran out of yesterday," said Kagome as she was picking up her basket. "Is there anything else you needed?"

"No Kagome, those herbs are the only thing we are in need of," replied Kaede sitting by the fire stirring a pot of stew. "But that reminds me. When is Sesshomaru planning on visiting the village again?"

Kagome gave a thoughtful look. "Hm. I'm not completely sure. I believe it should be in the next week or so." She bent down to quickly tie her shoes. 'Now that I think about it, it has been awhile since we have gone on a run together.' Just thinking about it sent a shiver of excitement down her back.

Though she may not be a dog demon like Sesshomaru, she was still part of the canine category. Foxes were normally solitary creatures, so she blamed her pack mentality completely on Sesshomaru.

Ever since she found him wounded in the forest and restored him back to health, he has considered her part of his pack. Since she was a distant canine, she knew how serious dogs considered pack. It was a life commitment. Once you are pack, you will always be pack.

Kagome glanced at the fire as she recalled that night so long ago.

Flash Back

The sky was clear of any clouds as the group settled down for the night. From her sleeping bag, Kagome watched the full moon slowly creep across the star lit sky. It was a perfect night for stargazing. But the trees the group decided to set up camp under obstructed her view. She gave a silent sigh. It had been a while since she was able to enjoy the night sky without any hindrances.

She surveyed her companions resting forms. Miroku was laying next to Sango with her Hirakostu between them as her only barrier against the Monk. Kirara was few feet away from them curled up with Shippo cuddling her tail.

She glanced up at the trees looking for the tell tale signs of Inuyasha. It was always hard to spy him when he always sat so far up in the tree. But she could hear his even breathing and slow heartbeat.

With the knowledge that she could sneak out of camp undetected, she slowly slipped out of her sleeping bag. She made her way out of camp hoping to come across an area that was not so heavily laden with trees. She let her ears migrate to the top of her head and her tail uncurl from her pajamas.

She truly enjoyed nights where she could escape from the group and let her true self step forward. Her ears twitched and swiveled side to side, listening to the different sounds the night had to offer.

When she was about to enter a clearing with enough of an open sky view to allow her to see the night sky clearly, she heard a shuffle followed by a small snarl. Her head bolted up as she searched around the area for the sound. She sniffed the air and found there was a small trace of blood on the wind.

Curiosity getting the best of her, she followed her nose to the source.

The closer she got, the smell of blood got thicker in the air. It was almost sickening how potent it was starting to become.

She followed the source until she came to a small river. There were several large rocks surrounding the bank and one particularly large boulder near the shallows. If it weren't for the smell of blood coating the air, it would have been a very beautiful area.

When she rounded the boulder, she came upon the sight of Sesshomaru. His eyes were red as he reclined against his pelt. Blood was pooling all around him. His body looked like it went through quite the thrashing.

Kagome took a step closer to get a clearer view of his injuries, but his growl of warning stopped her in her tracks. Her eyes glanced up to his, as his glared back at her.

She took a step back fully intending to go on her way and forget about ever running into the Demon Lord. But a pained whine made her steps falter. She returned her gaze to him and saw his pained grimace.

He was in pain.

She couldn't leave him.

Slowly she made her way to Sesshomaru. His growl returned full force. Kagome lowered herself to the ground and started to crawl to him, being sure her body language showed no aggression. When she got close enough, she bared her throat to him. In these instances it was always best to appease the alpha side in the male.

"Please Sesshomaru. I mean you no harm. I only wish to help."

She stayed like that for what felt like hours, until he gave a soft rumble; giving his permission for her to approach. 'Thank goodness. My neck was starting to hurt.'

She continued her approach and immediately noticed that all the blood pooled around him was from a diagonal slash on his chest. She quickly got to work by first ripping what was left of his hoari off his body. Also taking note his armor was missing.

She gasped. His torso was like it went through a paper shredder. She could even see a rib peeking through the worst of the damage.

Kagome quickly used his tattered hoari to help staunch the bleeding. She pushed her healing powers into her palms while she applied pressure. It was a few minutes before the blood flow started to slow.

During the whole process, Sesshomaru didn't take his eyes off of her. He wasn't sure why his beast allowed her near. It was never so forth coming to people, even if he did know them. He chalked it up to her being a part of Inuyasha's group, and in a way, a distant member of his own pack.

But something was not right. He took another sniff of the air and confirmed that this was indeed Inuyasha's pack mate. But upon closer inspection of her profile, he noticed some extra appendages that were not there in the rare occurrence the two groups met up. 'This cannot be possible.'

Sweat started to bead on Kagome's brow. She was exerting herself more than she thought she was going to. But, it had to be done. Though Sesshomaru wasn't a friend. He was still an ally to the group, and she wasn't going to just leave him hurt if she could do anything to help.

Putting the last bit of her healing powers into one final surge, she slumped back against the boulder. Though he was not one hundred percent healed. It was to the point where his demon healing would complete the healing by morning.

"Hn. I did not require your help, Priestess."

Kagome glanced up through tired eyes and found twin golden orbs returning her look. Giving him a small smile she replied, "I know, but, I couldn't leave you suffering like that. If it is within my power to help anyone, I'll do it."

It was silent for several minutes until she noticed Sesshomaru's eyes wander to the top of her head. Her eyes widened as she realized she didn't mask her appearance like she usually did. Instinctually, her hands raced to the top of her head to cover her ears from the Demon Lords prying eyes. But it was too late, he already saw.

"Tell me Priestess. Why do you have the appearance of a demon?"

Feeling a rush of adrenaline as her Fight-or-Flight instinct kicked in, she bolted.

In hindsight, that was probably not the best action to take. Especially considering she was trying to outrun a demon that was by far stronger and faster than herself. And unlucky for her, she had just piqued his curiosity.

It wasn't long until she could sense him closing in on her. Hoping she wasn't making a mistake, she transformed into her fox form to gain some distance.

'Uh-oh.'

From the spike of his demon energy, she could tell he also transformed into his demonic form. Taking a quick glance behind her, she was a little thankful that he wasn't his usual gigantic self. That one glance was her undoing and it sealed her fate as her paws got entangled in a mass of vines that were growing at a base of a tree.

Before she knew it, he was on top of her. His teeth were bared and hovering above her throat demanding her submission. She tried to fight him off of her but he didn't seem to budge. He just tightened his hold on her throat, giving off a warning growl.

With a wince, she went limp. After a few moments he removed his fangs and licked the abused flesh. "Transform back." It was not a request.

She felt his energy spike as he returned back to his humanoid body and she followed suite. She untangled the vines from around her feet before she stood up. She turned her attention to Sesshomaru and found him leaning against the same tree that had tripped her.

"I shall not repeat myself Priestess."

Seeing as she had no other alternative to get out of the situation, she gave a sigh and told him everything. How she was a rare member of the Dark Knight Kitsune Clan. How her mother had found her as a baby and raised her ever since. How she had to hide her identity because her breed was hunted ferociously for their fur. Then, finally, she explained the guilt she felt for having to hide her true self from her friends.

Through her whole explanation Sesshomaru didn't give any indication that he was listening let alone interested in her story. But Kagome knew better.

At the end of her story she looked warily at Sesshomaru. She honestly didn't know what he was going to do. She knew he had a prestigious background with all the wealth that goes with it, and she didn't know if he would want her fur to match his lifestyle.

Slowly, Sesshomaru pushed off the tree and languidly made his way to her. Frightened she took a step back for every step he took forward. Eventually she ran out of space and backed up into a tree.

He encroached upon her and lowered his head to the crook of her neck. He inhaled her scent deeply. 'Indeed. She is telling the truth.' Though it was complexly hidden, he was able to smell her true scent.

What happened next, he cannot truthfully admit the reason for his actions. Maybe it was his beast that was still to the forefront of his conscious. Maybe it was repayment for the help she offered. Maybe it was his secret desire of being part of a pack again. Or maybe it was simply because she was a rare breed and would enhance the prestige of his title.

In the end he knew he was just lonely, and he knew the female before him was loyal to a fault. With the limited number of interactions he has had with her, she has always proven herself and has gained his respect. In the end, he knew he would not regret this decision.

With her trapped against the tree and caged between his arms, he bathed her neck in his saliva. When her neck was thoroughly soaked, he rested his head on top of hers and nuzzled into her hair. He was never so affectionate, except for a few select people. And now, that included her.

Kagome had significantly calmed upon realizing what he was doing. 'Scent marking. But why?' Not fully understanding what brought this change in the Ice Lord, but feeling the urge from her beast, she reciprocated the action. She leaned in to give an experimental lick on his neck. Hearing his growl of encouragement, she continued to bathe this neck just as thoroughly as he did hers.

Finally the two broke apart, both smelling like the other. "Sesshomaru?"

He looked down at her smirking. "You are now part of my pack."

She was shocked. "But why?"

Sesshomaru shook his head and looked up at the stars. The clearing they found themselves in provided an excellent view of the night sky. "Do not question your instincts, Priestess. Though I do not understand the reasoning behind my beast's actions, I still heed what it wishes me to do." He returned his gaze to her. "Eventually you will understand."

"So, what does this mean?"

"It is exactly as I have said. You are now part of my pack. And to a dog, pack means everything."

"So, we're like family."

"Hn, in a way. But the ties are even stronger. Since Kitsunes are normally solitary creatures, it may take awhile for you to fully grasp what being part of a pack entails."

The days following that encounter were some of the hardest for Kagome. Inuyasha did not take the news too well. All his life he had hated his half-brother, and now, seeing what he considered his coated in a different scent drove him crazy. It took Kagome days to calm him down enough to even explain that their new bond was purely familial.

Miroku and Sango were not as bad as Inuyasha. But, they still held some reservations against Sesshomaru. They had been witness to some pretty gruesome encounters in the past.

It was eventually decided that the best course of action for everyone was for Sesshomaru to travel separately from the group, but he would pay a visit from time to time. Sesshomaru only agreed to this set up as long as everyone understood and abided by Pack Law. This basically stated that Sesshomaru was Alpha and he could come and go as often as he pleased. And he would rule his pack as he saw fit. Which was mainly just Kagome.

Suffice to say, Inuyasha didn't like that one bit.

End Flash Back

Kaede's eyes warmed as she watched Kagome lost in thought. She was truly happy that she was able to find a friend in the Ice Lord. He gave her the confidence she was lacking because of Inuyasha constantly tearing her down. But Kagome wasn't able to see how much she has changed or let alone by whom.

"It is good that Sesshomaru is planning to visit soon. I can tell ye and Rin have missed him."

Snapping out of her thoughts, Kagome smiled happily. "Yeah it has been awhile since he last visited. I'm really looking forward to it!" She was so excited! When Sesshomaru got here, the pack would be whole once again!

Turning to the door flap Kagome waved goodbye to Kaede. "Well, I better get going. Those herbs aren't going to pick themselves!"

"Ye are right, Kagome. But please be careful. The sun will be setting soon, so do not dawdle."

Kagome nodded as she walked out of the hut. The crisp evening air smelled wonderful as she took a deep breath. She always loved the twilight hours.

She walked along the path enjoying the sounds of nature as she glanced at the flowers she walked by. She loved the tranquil feeling the forest always brought her. In these moments she always thought about the course her life was taking. They were able to defeat Naraku and the Jewel became whole once more. But what no one expected was for the cursed bauble to re-enter Kagome and merge with her heart.

A few days after the final battle, Inuyasha finally made the move to ask her to be his mate. She was overjoyed! The man she loved was finally going to be hers forever. But before that happened, she still needed to tell him about her heritage. She was nervous about telling him the truth, but she was confident that it wouldn't matter to him.

Suddenly her ears perked forward catching low murmuring on the wind. Curiosity piqued, she followed the sound. 'What are people doing so far from the village?' She quickened her pace a little worried now. Villagers who wandered so far were just asking to be somebody's dinner.

Her fast pace quickly slowed as she started to hear moaning. Face blushing bright red she was about to turn around and head back the way she came. But she stilled her steps when she heard a certain name being called. 'Inuyasha?'

With dread settling in her stomach, she continued on. The sounds of passion only increased the farther she went. 'Maybe I'm just hearing things. That couldn't have possibly been Inu-'

"Kikyou"

Her heart sank.

"More, Inuyasha. More."

Kagome's ears were pinned to the back of her head. She closed her eyes and hid behind a tree. Hands clasped into fists over her chest; she couldn't make herself look at the couple beyond her tree. She didn't want the image she knew she would find ingrained in her mind.

She immediately turned to go back to the village but there final cries stopped her. Tears started to form in her eyes as she heard their panting breaths. When it became quiet, she dared to look past her tree.

Inuyasha had just withdrawn from Kikyou and was starting to redress. Kikyou still lay there basking in his presence. "Inuyasha. Do you love me?"

Kagome had to use her hand to cover her mouth to stop her gasp that wanted to escape.

Inuyasha looked at Kikyou with a warm glow in his eyes. "Of course I love you. I would do anything for you." He laid down beside her and wrapped his arms around her.

Kikyou turned in his hold and looked at him with what was mistaken as doubt. "If you love me as you claim. Then why do I hear rumors that you are to mate my reincarnation?"

His eyes widened in shock. Honestly he never would have thought that Kikyou would have heard any of the rumors. He was hoping to keep that a secret for a little while longer. At least until he has successfully mated both girls, then they would have no choice but to get along.

For now, he would have to continue to play this charade, and wait until he can act on his plans. "They're just rumors. You know how village girls like to gossip all the time," he said rolling his eyes. "They don't know what they're talking about."

"I suppose…"

Seeing as he was going to have to go further with this, he continued, "Just wait Kikyou, you'll see. Once everything has settled from the whole Naraku debacle, it will be time for me to take you as my mate. But, before I do that, I will kill Kagome for the rest of your soul. Then I will use the jewel to wish your body back."

"Oh Inuyasha." Kikyou reached up to wrap her arms around him as her head leaned in to capture his lips.

Kagome listened silently through it all. Her heart shattered with every word spoken. Her eyes started to turn red around the edges. She knew she had to get out of there. Forcing her body to move, she bolted into the forest.

Silent sobs racked her body as she ran blindly. She didn't care where she was going, as long as it was away from Inuyasha. Her hair flew up wildly as she tripped and fell to the ground in a sobbing heap. She sat there and dug her claws into the ground, her fox ears drooping sadly on her head. She was consumed with sadness, but her beast was full of rage.

The longer she sat there, the redder her eyes became. Depression was consuming her. She could already feel her hold on the reigns of her mentality loosening while her beast strained to take control. It wanted so badly to return to that clearing and show that dog what happens when you cross a kitsune.

'I need to get to the well before my beast is able to fulfill that desire.'

Already she could feel her fangs start to elongate and her claws get sharper. She was fighting a losing battle. She needed to move. Now.

She ran as fast as she could toward the well.

Reaching the clearing, she rushed passed the Tree of Ages. She could already feel her snout starting to lengthen and become more canine like. She had to hurry.

When she got to the lip of the well, she paused. She was hesitant to return to her time. 'What if I totally lose control and go on a rampage?! I could kill hundreds of innocent people!' The longer she hesitated, the redder her eyes became. Her beast wanted blood, and it would not be denied any longer.

Deciding that she couldn't go through the well in her current state, she turned away. She was fully intending to run as far away from the area as she could and hope for the best. But as soon as she turned her back on the well, she lost complete control. Her beast took the reigns so forcefully, her body jerked backward…

…and into the well.

The last thought she had as she felt her body fall through space was 'no…'
