It's Always Been This Way

Unnecessary disclaimer: None of the characters or storylines appearing in the TV show "House, M. D." belong to me.
Abstract: "You've got it all wrong," Cameron told House. "I didn't marry him because he was dying." Episode 1.07 Fidelity, House/Cameron.
…
A/N: This is just a little idea that I had. I wanted to play with some of the tropes about Cameron's history. And yes, I'm as shocked as you to be posting something for House once again!

"When I was in college, I fell in love, and I got married, and…"
"At that age, the chances of a marriage lasting—"
"It lasted six months. Thyroid cancer metastasized to his brain. There was nothing they could do. I was twenty-one and… I watched my husband die."
"I'm sorry… But that's not the whole story. It's a symptom, not your illness. Thyroid cancer would have been diagnosed at least a year before his death. You knew he was dying when you married him. Must have been when you first met him. And you married him anyway."
"You've got it all wrong," she said, turning back to the centrifuge. "I didn't marry him because he was dying. I married him because I was pregnant." She flicked her eyes towards House for an instant.
After a shocked pause, House came back with, "So that's the reason you got all choked up over the dead babies."
"It's easy to be heartless when you've never felt that kind of love," she shot back.
"So what happened to the baby?"
"What do you mean?" she asked, turning to him with an incredulous look. "Nothing happened. She's eight years old now."
He blinked, as everything he knew of her turned on its head. "Then where is she?"
"Staying the summer with her grandparents."
There was a long pause. "Your application didn't mention you were a single mom."
"Does it matter?"
"When you're on call at three in the morning it does."
"I'll manage," she said, and sighed. "I always do."
