Sam's eyes snapped open and he struggled to make out the room's details in the faint moonlight. He strained to hear beyond the building settling and the faint hum of traffic.
What was that?
Instinctively, he turned to the twin bed nearest the door before remembering Dean was off hunting too.
Padding across the room, he checked the door and windows. It's tough being alone when you know what's really out there.
Getting back into bed, he wrapped a hand around the blade he kept under his pillow and counted the hours until the return of day and his brother.
