A/N - I should be studying for a test I have tomorrow, and I swore off fanfiction completely until May... but damn! I couldn't hold this off for another week! Popped into my head right in the exam hall, in between lines of a critical analysis of Toni Morrison's poetry... Why can't I ever be inspired to write in a place where I can write? Sigh...
This is set in the Little Sunshine universe, the night of Lillian's birth, but it can be read as a simple poem without any connection to anything. Enjoy! And drop a review to tell me how I did, since I don't normally do poetry... I blame the Toni Morrison analysis...
SLEEP'S SLUMBER
She sleeps as her mother,
A slumber that is both restful and desperate,
Tired, yet exhilarated; soft cheeks ripe apple-red,
And long lashes curling over lids tiny…
His heart pounds with love,
Hammering away in its cage like the echoes
Of a ceremonial drum, an announcement of a new life.
He wonders when that life became so…
Miracles – each breath she takes,
Small bosom heaving up and down,
Little fingers curling around his rough digits,
The coarseness of her father against
Her petal-like softness soothing her into a slumber,
That is far more than sleep and far less than rest.
Vision blurry, he sinks next to her ,
One foliage eye on her mother, his love,
And another on his dreaming child,
Hands raise in silent prayer,
And heart lifts in quiet, wondrous gratitude,
For this is life, and it is now his,
From now unto forever,
And beyond that even.
Eyes close in bittersweet joy,
And he joins his family
In a sleep that slumbers deep...
A/N - And that pretty much had me bawling... I love fluff, don't you? ;) Going back to study now, but the sequel to Little Sunshine can be expected in the first week of May, so keep an eye out!
