Jane and Lisbon have a complicated relationship. At times, Jane is the annoying toddler and Lisbon is the scolding parent. At other times, they seem to work together as a brother and sister, or mother and father would. And in other moments, they are each other's comforters, and still in others, flirtatiousness engulfs their conversations and actions.
Still, though, throughout all of these instances, the one thing that remains steady in their relationship is that they always think they know what the other one was thinking, and most of the time Jane is more correct at guessing Lisbon's feelings than Lisbon is with Jane's.
Perhaps their relationship can be compared to a scraggly tree clinging to a barren island in torrential waters. Sometimes, Jane is the tree leaning on Lisbon for love and support, and other times, Lisbon is in dire need of Jane's reassurance, which Jane provides. And even though the world is rough around them, much like the tree and the rock, there still is a glimmer of hope that the waves will soon calm and all will be well.
Surely, on some glorious day, everything will be better again, and then perhaps the tree can grow to its full potential, and even though it won't need the island for support anymore, it will stay with it, because that's where its roots are, and, let's face it, the tree has grown rather fond of the rock, and the rock has grown equally fond of the tree.
For despair and storms have brought and will bring Jane and Lisbon closer together, and perhaps, when all this madness surrounding them is over, they really will still be enjoying each other's company.
For Jane loves Lisbon, ad Lisbon loves Jane, though perhaps neither of them in a romantic way yet. For they still are that tree on an island.
And even though they are alone in the middle of the storm, they are together, for the one person that can help them is each other. And no one else.
