Shii let out the breath she had been holding. Her hand ached from the weight of the baseball. Grunting, she tossed it as best she could, before stumbling backwards, and landing on the ground with a small 'oof!'. Shii frowned, watching as the baseball slammed against the ground. Glancing at the sun, she stood, brushing herself off, and picked up her baseball, hurrying back into the woods she had come from.
Liirah tugged the scarf she was wearing tighter around her neck. It's not that it was cold; no, Liirah didn't like going places without it. She felt cold without it, even in summer. Her breath was warm against her hand as she held an ice cube in it, watching it melt. She looked at the setting sun, and hurried home, into the woods, from which she had come.
Kai stumbled down the cobblestone pathway, that marked the way to the school building. She tightened the straps on her bag, hugging her newest book to her chest. Another science textbook, cleverly stolen from the classroom which she loved. Her brow furrowed. It wasn't nice out; not at all. It was to warm outside. Frowning, she hurried into the trees, watching the sun vanish beyond the horizen.
Shii let out a loud squeal as she slammed into something. Liirah backed up quickly, terrified.
"Gosh, I'm so sorry!" Liirah apologized quickly, bowing slightly.
"Oh, I'm sorry!" Shii mumbled, looking away shyly. A book was slammed near them, and Kai hit the ground, breathing heavily.
Kai looked up suddenly aware of the other girls there. "Oh no, I'm sorry." She whispered, standing up and wiping herself off, scooping her book up and offering her hand. "I'm Kai."
Liirah accepted it, shaking it. "I'm Liirah." She said warmly. "Nice to meet you, Kai." She squatted down near Shii. "What's your name?" She asked.
Shii looked up at the two older, and taller females in front of her. "I'm Shii." She offered politely.
"Where are you headed?" Liirah asked the two others, both of whom shrugged. "You can stay at my house, if you'd like. I don't live far. I'm guessing you're both orphans as well, huh?"
Both girls nodded as they started walking down the dirt path.
