Remembrance

Damn that Hokage's funeral episode…(sniff) it makes me want to write angst bunnies….

Today was a day of remembrance in Konoha.

Kakashi stood in front of the black obelisk, his single visible eye focused clearly on the etchings carved into the sacred object. Uchiha Obito, it read, the kana faded with dust. He brushed it off with his hands, and then put both hands in his pocket as he read over the second name he had come to see, Namikaze Minato.

How are you doing, you two? He questioned dully in his mind, his sigh a bare hush against the early morning air. They had both died so long ago, but their pictures rang clear in his mind: Sensei with his goofy grin, his bright yellow hair and his blue eyes, the same pair he saw every time his knuckleheaded student. Obito…Obito with his black eyes—Kakashi never ever saw the picture of Obito in his minds eye with the Sharingan. He saw him as the same loser Uchiha whose values and inner strength were carved into his very being, just like the same Uchiha's name was into the stone.

Asuma had mentioned to him that he was becoming more and more like the goofy Uchiha every day—he was late for everything, simply because he visited his best friend and rival through hail and high water. He snorted quietly—the next thing he knew, he would be wearing bright orange goggles and complaining that he got dust in his eyes.

Sometimes, Kakashi wished he could've been more like his sensei, the ever-calm Minato He was a powerful presence, the type of man that could turn heads just by walking into a room. His judgements had always been precise, and he ruled over Konoha with a kind hand and heart. The man still had time to be a goofball, and Kakashi remembered that his original opinion of the Fourth Hokage hadn't been a good one. The man frustrated him to no end with his constant skipping out on paperwork to spend more time watching the people of Konoha instead of being locked in an office. He had even found him with his nose in one of the very same books Kakashi read today, sitting under his desk and making him promise not to tell Sarutobi he was hiding. "Read this book." He had said with a grin, "You'll like it, Kakashi. I promise."

Okay. Sometimes Kakashi was glad he wasn't too much like his sensei.

Still, he allowed his dark eyes to close as he placed both palms together in a typical prayer position, and was about to start when he heard a soft voice behind him call, "Kakashi?"

He didn't even turn around. Every day, he had the same person come to pay respects to him as well, "Hello…Rin."

The always-kind woman sent him a small smile as she set down the bouquet of white roses in her hands on the obelisk. Clasping her hands together in prayer, she smiled up at the heavens, "…Hey Obito…how are you doing?"

Kakashi couldn't help but crack open his eye as he watched Rin: she had never talked to Obito out loud before, not in any of their days of silent remembrance. Smiling, she continued, "Sandaime-sama died today…he gave his life for the village, just like Minato-sensei did. Speaking of him, I hope you three are having fun spying on every girl anywhere near you. Don't forget about me…"

"Rin…?"

Rin turned to Kakashi, wiping her eyes with one hand, "Sandaime-sama's funeral is going to start soon…we should go."

He nodded wordlessly and turned on his heel, tucking his hands deep into his pockets. She followed him, and they were almost to the tower when he spoke, "You know, Rin…he'll never forget about you."

Rin looked at him questioningly, and he smiled through his mask, visible eye crinkling shut, "He loved you after all."
