Authors note: Just a wee idea I had this afternoon. This is gonna be my first published fic so if the formatting or anything like that goes all to hell I can only apologise! It hasn't quite come out how I planned, but it is just a little one shot so...I'm running with it. Anyway...hope you like!
Opposites
"Can anyone give me examples of opposites?" Professor Xavier looked out expectantly at his students. At the back of the room, sitting back leisurely in his chair tossing a small fireball between his hands, John Allerdyce scowled. What the hell? Did he think they were five years old? Never the less, his classmates started to answer:
"Day and night..."
"Good and evil..."
"Fire and ice..."
John turned to look at the boy next to him. Bobby Drake just smiled back and winked at his roommate. John scowled again. Bobby was always far too chirpy that early in the morning. Suddenly, something cold hit John's hand, making him jump slightly. Looking down, he found a little ball of ice. John hated ice. Throwing it to the side, he narrowed his eyes as Bobby caught it with a quiet laugh, starting to toss it between his hands as John had been doing previously.
I'll give you bloody opposites, John thought. John Allerdyce and Bobby Drake.
"Black and White..." the other students continued.
Hot headed and calm...
"Love and hate..."
Rash and patient...
"Up and down..."
Arrogant and modest...
"Left and right..."
Loud and quiet...
"Old and new..."
Vulgar and polite...
"Heaven and Hell..."
Fire and ice...
"Very good," the Professor nodded approvingly to his students. "Now, let us consider the relationship between many opposites. Consider that without one, the other may not exist. That even though they appear to contradict each other, without the other, they are nothing. Without a villain, there cannot be a hero. Without feeling cold, we would not appreciate heat. Without knowing hate, would we feel love?"
John frowned. What wishy washy drivel. The iceman was his opposite, but John was quite sure that he would still be around even if Bobby wasn't...
"Of course," the professor continued. "There is also to be considered, the old saying opposites attract..."
John cast a sideways glance at the ice mutant next to him, just in time to see Bobby cast a glance at him, an amused glint in his icy blue eyes. John just smirked and shook his head at his best friend. Ok, so maybe that wasn't drivel...
