Porch
"Dad, I want to build a porch."
Everett nearly chokes on his tea. Helpful little hands pat him on the back.
"A porch? Steven, that's a lot of work. Why do you want to build a porch?"
The young boy shrugs.
"Mom said Grandma Carmen had a porch, and they would spend a lot of time there. And that she misses it."
He looks at his son, all big eyes and bouncing with excitement.
"All right," he sighs.
"I want it to be a surprise," Steven says, and Everett gathers him in his arms.
"We'll try our best," he chuckles.

Barn
"Mom? How come dad is working on the bison barn?"
"Everyone's working on the barn, honey. You and I will go this afternoon."
"But dad is the leader, isn't he? How come he has to work?"
TJ looks at her daughter, an actual frown creasing her tiny features.
"Sara, we all have to work so we can live well. And your dad works very hard."
"But he's the leader!"
TJ smiles. "Yes. And so he has to be a good example for everyone else."
Sara nods. "Because dad is the best."
"Yes, he is."
"Let's go now and help him."
