It stood alone on the hill; a gaunt, creaky relic of Victoriana, dingy grey, paint-flaked and neglected. Adorned as it was with all manner of gargoyles and carvings, the Gothic touches held a sinister threat of evildoings within.

The path to the door was overgrown with bushes and brambles whose thorns reached out to capture the unwary, casting eerie shadows over the abandoned graveyard, warning trespassers away.

"Maybe this was a bad idea," Bella whispered as Jacob led her cautiously through the cold, barren, mist-covered yard towards the doors.

Something was wrong. He was a 6'7" wall of muscle that could handle anything, so why did he want to haul his girl into his arms and run?

Concerned, Jake held her tightly, moving her behind him, protecting her from potential danger. "Honey, I won't let anything happen to you," he reassured her.

As they stepped onto the rotting porch, they glanced around the horror movie before them, both praying that the stories they'd heard about this place weren't true.

It was rumoured that hundreds of years ago, a coven of murderous vampires roamed the streets hunting for innocent young girls. When they'd caught their prey, they'd be dragged back there and brought to a slow, torturous and excruciating death. Screams and cries for help and mercy were heard for miles.

Jake prayed they were myths and nothing more.

Because if anything happened to his girl...

"Too pussy to go in?" Quil's voice came out of nowhere, making Bella jump, and taunting Jake.

"Fuck you, Ateara," he growled, pulling Bella safely under his arm.

Quil went to respond when Embry cut across him, "Enough. Let's get on with it."

Inside, the putrid floorboards groaned under them. Cobwebs hung from the ceiling and fixtures, dark shadows were lurking in the air, the faint stench and whispers of long-dead women haunted the walls, along with the chilling sound of stalking footsteps that elicited from nowhere.

"Jake..." Bella panicked, pushing further into his side as the footsteps inched closer.

Jake's eyes darted around the room, his wolf restless at the notion of someone harming his imprint. Now fully alert, he cupped her face with his hands. "Baby, I'm right here and I won't let anything happen to you." He lovingly kissed her lips. "I'm gonna try the lights. You stay there; I'll be right back."

Bella nodded, unconvinced, and kissed him back. "I love you, Jake. Hurry back."

Jake smiled, then left her for a brief moment to search for the light switch. Once found, he beamed triumphantly. "Ready to be blinded, Bells?"

...

"Bells?"

His heart stopped.

She was gone.

"Bella?" Jake called out, panicked.

...

His blood ran cold.

She'd been taken.

"BELLA!"

Every Halloween there were reports of a girl's scream and a young man's howls in pain for the girl he's searching for. People also claim to have seen a tall, dark, handsome man wander the property whimpering, "I'm coming to save you, Bella. I promise, I'm coming..."
