"Well isn't this exciting?" asked Ryan Evans sarcastically. He and his girlfriend of just over two years were sitting in Julliard's student center, which was full of noise and activity at every table - except theirs.
"What's your problem?" his girlfriend, Kelsi Nielson asked. Her eyes were full of annoyance, both of them had been getting on eachother's nerves recently.
"What do you mean?" he asked defensivly. Kelsi sighed, and looked back down at a piece of paper she was scrawling on. Ryan looked across the table to see what she was doing; he quickly concluded that she was writing a song, probably for him.
"Hmph," Ryan said. "What is that another song for Dan?" he asked. Kelsi looked up at Ryan, as though she couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"Ryan, what makes you think I like Dan?" she asked. Ryan took a sip of his coffee as he tried to think of how to answer this politely.
"Gee, I don't know. The fact that you're always hanging all over him?" he proposed. "No wonder you're always so desperate to hang out in my dorm, you're always hoping he'll come by."
"Oh please," she said. "Yeah, you caught me. I have a huge crush on Dan," she said, rolling her eyes. Dan was Ryan's roommate; he had been since freshman year. However, this year, he and Kelsi had a class together where they were assigned to write a song together ... and Ryan wasn't stupid, it was obvious Dan had devoloped a crush on Kelsi. As if it wasn't enough that his roommate was pining after his girlfriend, he was almost certain that Kelsi liked him, too.
"I knew it!" Ryan said, despite the fact that Kelsi wasn't being serious. Kelsi stared at Ryan in disgust.
"You're as annoying as your sister," she snapped.
"I know you don't like her, but she is my twin sister," he reminded her. "I could go on about how much I hate your family, but I don't."
"You don't know my family," Kelsi said. "And if you keep acting like you have been these last couple weeks, you never will," she added on, somewhat lamely.
"Oh, is that a threat?" Ryan asked.
"Ryan, shut up. I'm trying to work," she said, throwing his pencil down on the table. People were beginning to turn around and watch their fight; they, however, were completely oblivious.
"Fine," he said. He leaned back in his chair, as though daring Kelsi to continue on with their argument.
"Please stop being so immature," Kelsi murmured, still bending over her song.
"At least I'm mature enough ... or classy enough, or something, to not flirt with other girls," Ryan said, taken aback by Kelsi's remark.
"You know Ryan, if you think I'm seriously dating some other guy, or you think that I'm immature, then why don't you just break up with me?" Kelsi asked.
"Wait - what?" Ryan asked. He didn't want to break up with Kelsi! Couples fought, but they got over it, didn't they?
"Yeah," Kelsi said. "Fine. Whatever then. I guess we're over." Kelsi dramtically (actually in a style quite reminiscent of Sharpay) stood up, flung her backpack over her shoulder, and stormed out of the room. Ryan was left sitting alone at the table, confused by what had just happened. He never said that he wanted them to break up! All he had said was 'what'!
He walked back to his dorm room; his mind full of confusing stuff, which he could not make sense of. Thank god Dan isn't here, Ryan thought, as he sat down on the end of his bed. That was the last person he wanted to see at the moment.
But what if he's comforting Kelsi, or something? he thought. He got up, alarmed by the prospect.
I'll just talk to her tomorrow, he decided, sitting back down. We'll just smoothen things out ...
