I pad into the nursery. I see my fellow kits fighting over the biggest portion of fresh kill. I sigh. Must they always fight?
I shake the rain out of my dark gray pelt. My mother walks over and grooms my fur down. I purr. "Rainkit, go sit with the others." But her voice isn't demanding, in fact, it is quite gentle.
I go over and plop myself next to the others. There are nine kits in this nursery including me. All eight walk away. I sigh.
Wanting to be a medicine cat is hard. Everyone thinks of you as weak, just because you don't want to fight. I hope that I get the medicine cat spot. Then I won't have to live with the others. They annoy the Bloodclan out of me.
The next morning, we have a quick and easy assessment to be an apprentice. I try to do only mediocre, so that they put me as a medicine cat apprentice.
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey gather under the Highrock!" We all do. "On this bright and sunny day, four kits are ready to be made apprentices. And first, Rainkit. You will not be a typical apprentice. We have seen your skill in medicine and getting others to stop fighting. Rainkit, you are now Rainpaw. And you are the apprentice of Goldshimmer the medicine cat!"
I wake up with a happy feeling in my stomach. Today is the day. Today I become an apprentice. Today Goldshimmer becomes my mentor.
"All cats old enough to catch their own prey, gather under the Highrock!"
We all pad outside. The weather is cold, and rain is falling. I gulp when I think of that phrase. Rain is falling.
"We are here to make four cats apprentices. Rainkit, do you promise to be a strong apprentice?"
"I do!"
"Good. Then by the ways of the Clan, you are now Rainpaw. Your mentor is, Brownfur!"
"What?" I yowl. Brownfur looks offended. "I should be a MEDICINE CAT apprentice!"
"But you are a good fighter. We want you to be a regular apprentice," The leader looks shocked.
"Fine. But I won't fight. I'll train, hunt and do patrols, but I won't fight."
I see a conversation happening between the deputy and the leader. I look up, hopeful.
The leader finally says, "We don't think that you have what it takes to be a medicine cat. I'm really sorry." I shrug him off, quickly touch my nose to Brownfur, and run out.
Every time a drop of rain hits my fur, it stings. Acid rain, I tell myself, Acid rain.
A/N this is a story for a Warriors challenge forum. I was given a kit, and I had to write his hopes and dreams of becoming a medicine cat. I could crush his dreams if I wanted. -Shadepaw
