Left Alone:

Elizabeth walked out to the edge of the cliff she lived on, staring out at the water. It had been two months since she last saw Will and she was getting lonely. She hated feeling abandoned by the man she loved, but she just had to remind herself that he didn't have a choice. Still she wished she could at least see the sails of his ship on the horizon. She wanted to know that he was still thinking about her.

A tear fell down her face and she quickly wiped it away.

It was going to be yet another day of her trying to forget that her husband was out at sea and she couldn't join him. Elizabeth had been trying to keep busy with working around the house. It was an older house and it had needed some fixing up. She had painted all of the rooms, got some decorations, she even ended up fixing some of the plumbing, but there wasn't enough work to keep her busy for ten years.

Elizabeth sat on the bottom of the staircase that led to her bedroom, staring at the closed door. She would have given anything to see Will walk through that door. She could feel the tears welling up in her eyes and this time she let them flow. She put her head in her hands and rocked back and forth. Elizabeth couldn't stand being alone anymore. She wanted to wait for Will, but she never realized how hard it was going to be.

Standing up, Elizabeth looked through the empty house. She had worked so hard to get it to look nice and work perfectly. It didn't seem to matter now. Waiting for Will was something she couldn't do anymore. She needed to see him right away, but she wouldn't know where to look for him. It wouldn't be easy to get a ship or a crew that would help her.

There was a crack of thunder as Elizabeth headed back outside. She looked up at the sky and noticed a storm was approaching fast. It looked as if she would not be setting sail even if she wanted to. She sat down on the edge of the cliff watching the water below. Tears gently rolled down her face as she thought of Will and the life she had dreamed they would have together. It was all just a memory.

Elizabeth knew that the people in town talked. She never told them why Will was never home. The more they talked about her being abandoned the more she felt it was true. She had been left alone to dream of the life she wished she had.

Will was out on the sea, helping the souls lost at sea find their way to where they belong. She believed that she belonged with Will, but nobody would be able to lead her to him. She continued to stare at the water below, watching it crash against the many rocks. The storm would be there soon, but she didn't intend to go back into the house.

There was one way she could be with Will. There was a way to ease her pain. She stood up gazing upon the rocks in the water. Will had to help those who were lost at sea and she could be one of those people. It would be a way that they could always be together. She could be a crewman on his ship and then they would be together forever. It was a long drop and she couldn't guarantee that it would end her life. At that point, she could not feel or see anything around her. She wouldn't be alone anymore and she would no longer feel abandoned.

The wind picked up as if urging her to jump. The water crashed against the rocks more furiously, almost like it was beckoning to her. Elizabeth didn't want to be left alone again and this was the answer. Without another thought she peered over the edge, feeling the slight mist from the raging sea. Elizabeth closed her eyes as her body seemed to go numb. She stepped off of the ledge feeling the wind rush around her before hitting the rocks below.
