"Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, happy New Year guys!" I exclaimed to all of our close friends in the flat.
A couple of our friends embraced, the only actual couple in the room, Carrie and her boyfriend whose name escapes me, shared a kiss as I scanned the room for the person I wanted to kiss.
Phil and I were friends, but I'd fallen for him despite all I knew true. He came over and gave me a hug, knowing he wasn't sober he kind of flopped into my arms rather than an actual embrace.
"Phil, you're super drunk." I laughed, trying to suppress the urge to kiss him.
"No m'not," he protested as he held onto me for stability.
"Yes you are, sit down." I said, pushing him onto the couch.
I sat next to him, close enough to hear his voice but far enough not to draw attention to ourselves.
"You know you remind me of someone."
"Like who?" I asked, rolling my eyes. The choice to stay sober for the night was probably good for later when I wouldn't wake up with a hangover, but I really wanted a swig of vodka to erase all these feelings.
"You remind me of…my flatmate. His name is Dan, maybe you know him."
"He does sound familiar," I laughed at his drunken banter. Phil drunk was far funnier than anything I'd ever seen.
"He's my best friend, but don't tell him this…" He said leaning into my ear as he whispered, "I really like him."
"My lips are sealed."
"You're pretty cute too ya know, but not as good as Dan. I wish I could find him, I wanted to give him a kiss to celebrate the New Year."
"Phil, I'm right here. I've been here the whole time." I said, leaning over to Phil and whispering to him. "And I kind of like you too."
"Dan?" He asked, mind obviously pretty fuzzy before I pressed our lips together.
Years of being with women and the last year pining away for the man I'd hopelessly fallen in love with and now we were kissing. I felt sparks fly as our kiss deepened, his tongue tangling with my own.
I pulled away, finally needing air as I saw a smile cross his beautiful features. His bright blue eyes shone through the pleading look he was now giving me.
"I love you Phil," I said my nose pressing against his own.
"You're perfect Dan," he said before he gave me another peck. "And I love you too, I always have."
