Mariner's Regret
I'm just a lonely sailor
I've sailed the ocean blue
I've seen things you can't imagine
Nor would wish to.
I've seen all the world's wonders
Seen the works of Man
God's works seem suspiciously absent
Washed away like castles made of sand.
I'm just a lonely sailor
So far from my home
But home seems like a story
Like the saints dead in Rome.
This ship sails on
These waves keep crashing.
Both creating and destroying lives
Broken into pieces by relentless smashing.
Fate is a funny thing
An unstoppable force; an unmoving object
When we lost control of our ship
We could hardly object.
She came to life with a mind of her own
A vengeful goddess beautiful in her wrath
She cut a swath through the ocean
Leaving death in her path.
We couldn't stop her
We couldn't stem the tide
We tried for knots and knots
But we had nowhere to hide.
We finally made our port
In someone else's house.
I felt nothing but regret and pity
For it used to be such a beautiful city.
