Maturity
"You changed." I stated it matter of factly hoping she wouldn't bite my head off.
I received a smile in return and I let go of the breath I didn't know I was holding.
"Good or bad?" She asked, glancing sideways, while she was trying to maneuver us to a less crowded lane on the highway which would lead us to the lab.
"Less bad?" She offered when I didn't answer her question immediately.
"No not like that. You matured." I cringed when I heard my own words.
She laughed out loud.
"I notice we haven't talked for a while?"
"Why?" I answered a bit suspicious. I wondered where this conversation I started myself was leading.
"I don't think I'm the only one who matured." She said while pointing in the direction of my wedding band.
"You should stop fiddling with it though, otherwise you won't be able to get it off."
She was right my ring finger was already starting to get red. Tina hadn't been too pleased to see it lying on the kitchen table the other night and knowing she probably would be dropping by the lab tonight I didn't want to annoy her more than I already did this morning. There was no need to sleep on the couch again, no need at all.
"But what did you mean?" I didn't expect her to come back to our previous topic of conversation.
"It was just something Nicky said the other day and something I noticed myself."
"You and Nick talked about me?" She seemed a bit too interested in the fact Nick was also involved in the reasoning behind my earlier statement.
Taking a closer look at her face I noticed I had mistaken worry for curiosity.
A look of sadness passed over her.
"You and Nick, okay?" I asked wanting to know what made her mood change so rapidly.
"I guess." She said doubt lacing her words.
I reached over to stop her fingers which were nervously tapping on the steering wheel. Giving me a confused look, she dropped her hand in her lap.
"Sometimes I feel like I'm too messed up to reach out to him, to help him through the dark hours."
She was opening up more to me now than she ever had, proving my point that she had indeed matured.
"I don't want him to feel lonely, likeā¦."
"You did." I finished her sentence the way I knew she was going to finish it.
Eyeing me from the corner of her eyes, she hesitated a second before replying.
"Yeah."
"He may be lonely, but he is not alone." I sincerely hoped she was buying the line I was selling hersince I didn't buy it entirely myself.
"More mature, huh?" She asked a small smile already appearing on her face, indicating she somewhat believed what I had told her.
"Yeah, you even shared your PB&J sandwiches with me."
