To me this is the crack pairing to end all crack pairings. Why? It's Beowulf. XD I'm no fan of his, but I'm not a hardcore hater like some. He and a certain stubborn princess together would be...interesting, to say the least.

How the hell had she ended up with him, anyway?

It wasn't that she was a princess and he was just a mercenary, the whole class thing certainly hadn't stopped Levin and Sylvia. It wasn't his looks...sure, that smug grin could get a little annoying to look at but it could've been worse.

The problem was that Beowulf was a jerk. Not like those Verdane savages that took Lady Edain or the pirates that had attacked her and Claude, of course, but he was gruff and callous and stubborn and macho; basically he was Lex on a bad day times ten. And boy, did they know how to waste precious time arguing through each one's refusal to give in and admit the other might have a point.

But for some unexplainable reason, Tiltyu had fallen in love with him. What was it about him that made her insist on riding with him during the marches and feel safer with him around and say yes when he asked her for a date?

"Hey, Princess." He sat down beside her then, tossing another log onto the campfire, and she smiled.

"Need a blanket?" she asked. He nodded; she wrapped a blanket around them and he wrapped his arm around her. Tiltyu smiled, leaning into his warmth, and Beowulf grinned.

"See, this is what I like about the cold. Gives me an excuse to get cozy with you!"

He could be sweet sometimes. Almost. And he was honest and dependable and an all-around decent guy. For a jerk.

How had she fallen for him in the first place? Did it matter?

Not really, she decided.
