It's amazing what the death of a loved one does to people. It can traumatize people greatly. Push people to the breaking point.

It's not hard to push a person over the edge. Little things slowly driving her insane. Still the person can hold on to their compousure.

But nothing like that can hold up forever. Nothing can keep that protective wall from shattering.

And so it was for Rachel when Tobias died.

It was quite idiotic how he died. The yeerks had presented so many millions of possible death scenarios.

Tobias did not die at the hands of the yeerks. When she thought of how he died she wanted to kill herself. It was so stupid.

Rachel and Tobias had been flying. Flying and enjoying the feel of the wind on their feathers. They glided through the air. Not talking, but enjoying each other's company none the less.

The silence between them was good. All they heard was the Thrap! of there wings slicing through air.

All was good, all was peaceful.

Oh, how great that silence was! It was a silence that Rachel could have listened too for hours.

But something disrupted that silence. A gunshot.

Tobias fell. Hunters had done this. Stupid teenagers looking for a thrill.

But in an odd way Rachel was happy he had died like this. Tobias had died as what he loved to be. A hawk flying through the wind. Not in the midst of some great fight. Not at the hand of the yeerks.

Rachel knew how flying made Tobias happy. She was happy for him, happy he had died this way. She wanted to be happy too.

Rachel went to talk to Cassie. Cassie would help her.

Rachel let herself into the barn. Cassie wasn't there. Rachel looked at the cages. This was where Tobias had become the hawk for the first time, she thought.

A sad idea went through her. She looked at the cages. She found what she was looking for.

Rachel touched the red tail hawk's body and prepared to become it. Forever.
